Walters agai n ca me through th e fir st turn in seco n d , fo llowed b y Shi m p , Sleeter and Hamblin. Hamblin quickly passed Sleeter fo r fourth . In th e lead, O'Connor bobbled , ca us ing Walters to make an eva sive m o ve. Shimp a n d Hamblin p a s s ed both Walters a n d O'Connor 10 take first and second. On lap tw o, Hamblin charged hard on Shimp, almost takin g Shi mp's front tire off in a tu m . Hamblin completed the pass and was again in firs t. Shimp pu t pressure on Hamb lin throu gh the rest of the moto, bu t he was unab le to com plete a pa ss. At the finish, it was a triu mphant Hambl in , foll ow ed by Sh imp, Sle e ter and Walters. Glen Helen Raceway Park San Bernard ino, Californ ia Results: June 19-20, 1999 By Beth LaRock SAN B ERNARDI;'0, CA, JUNE 19-20 amaha-mou nted Sean Hamblin's d etermin ation was evid e nt in bo th the 125cc B Stock and Modi fied classes a t th e Lo re t ta Lynn ' s Region al Qu alifier, held at Glen Helen Raceway Park . As he took first overall in the Stock class and swe pt the Mod ified clas s with 1-1-1 wins, specta tors at th e event w ou ld not h ave guessed that Hamblin had been off his bike for over a mon th due to a broken foot. Fiftee n racer s lined u p for th e firs t moto of the two-day eve nt, the four-lap 12Scc B Stock cla ss. Only five wou ld qu alify for the cha nce to go to Tennessee. Coming throu gh the first tum, Ham blin found him self in third, beh ind Sean O'Connor and Dusty Walters . Both Walt ers and Hamblin made sho rt wo rk of O'Conno r in the first half of lap one.ipas sing him to take the number-one an d -two positions, respectively. Jonat han Shimp, with Andrew Short and Michael Sleeter in tow , passed O'Conno r at the start of lap two. Shimp appeared to be maki ng ground on Ha mblin until he cut the pod ium U-tu rn too tigh t, tan gling with a ha y bale and goin g down. Short and Sleeter took up positions thr ee and four but we re unabl e to catch the lead ers . Du ring laps two thro ug h fou r, Ha mblin di d his best to try to get past Waiters. In fact, Ham blin d id have the lead on lap thr ee throu gh Budd 's Creek, but . Walters quickly regained first. Thr ough the rest of the moto, even tho ugh Hamblin appea red to have the better line , Walters w as a ble to s h u t him d own . Two tu rns to the chec kered flag, Ham blin still hung on to the back tire of Waiters, bu t he was unab le to pass. Walters took the firs t-moto wi n, followed by Ham blin , Short and Sleeter. After the first moto, Walters and Hamblin stopped to congra tulate one ano ther, Hamblin completely covered in mu d. " Yo u ruin ed m e, " h e lau gh ed . "I had no tear- of fs, I didn't think it'd be tha t mu dd y." Both rid er s admitted they had fun slidi ng thr ough muddy sections of track. O'Connor again claimed the holeshot in moto two . He quickly lost first when he went down in the third tum, allowing Sh imp, Walters, Sleet er and Hamblin to pass. ' '[f 36 Before the first lap was over, Hamblin mo ve d in to th ird , behin d Shi mp a nd Walt ers. Spectators saw a replay of mo to on e, wit h Walters and Hamblin w heel to wheel, competing this tim e for second. Shimp, in firs t, ran a clean, consistent mo to to the finish li ne . Walters agai n held off Hamblin to the finish, the riders finishing in second an d third. Sho rt, wh o started off the moto in sixth, worked his wa y thr ou gh the pa ck to finis h fou rth. Sleeter rounded ou t the top five. "I go t a good start and I d idn't fall d own th is time," sai d Sh im p . "Tha t helps ou t a lot." Regul a r a s clockwor k, O'Co nn o r seized the holesh ot for a third time. This time, both Walters and Ha mb lin were on O'Conno r' s back tire. Hamblin d id not wa ste any time and passed Walt ers in the secon d tum of the moto. Walters later lost four mor e position s after landing on a hay bale. Continui ng his charge, Ham blin took a high , ou tside line coming out of Budd 's Creek and took the lead away from O'Connor. At the start of lap tw o, Hamblin had developed a comfo rta ble lead, followed by O'Connor, Short and Shi mp. Both Sho rt and Shimp slid past O'Conn or on the seco nd lap. Sho rt had his sights set on Hamblin. Th e white flag ca me ou t and Short closed the ga p on Ham blin to th ree bike len gt hs. Riding agg ressively, Sho rt tried new lines in an attempt to get aro u nd Hamb lin . Hamblin held off Short to the finish . Ham blin congratulated Short, w ho came fro m Black Fores t, Colorad o, for the event. . "Andrew's riding really good out here, even though he's never ridd en out here," Hamb lin commented. "He's really fast." Short was pleased wi th second place, espec ially since he d id it with an inju red w rist. " l' rn ha vin g a lo t o f fu n ou t her e," said Short. "You can't win everything . You'v e just go t to give it your best. We'll all be on an eve n level back at Lor etta's. 1think I'll do well." Hamblin's 2-3-1 finishes earn ed him fir st ove ra ll in th e 12Scc B Stoc k class. Short claimed seco nd wit h 3-4-2 finishes, followed by Walte rs' third -pla ce 1-36 finis hes. l;h e 12Scc B Mod ified class was the first moto held on Sunda y, aga in on a fres hly watered track. O'Conno r conti n- ued his string of holeshots, followed by Walt ers and Brandon Barnes . O'Conno r could not hold the lead and slid ou t in th e second turn, losin g five positions and placing Walters and Barnes in firs t and second. Hamblin appea red to be out of contention at the sta rt, coming through the holesh ot tu rn in seven th. However, by the end of the firs t lap he wa s in third place, putting pr essure on Barnes . It took Hamblin one mor e lap before he got aro u n d Barnes a nd sta rted his attack on Walters. Shimp also moved throu gh the pack, starting off in sixt h but claiming fourth by lap three . Barnes suffe red one more at tack when he was stuffed by Shimp in the finish -line turn, allowing Shim p to take third. O n the whi te-flag lap, thr ee-quarters of the w ay to the finish lin e, Hamblin mad e a daring move th rou gh the mud to take the number -on e po sitio n. WaIters was unable to regain firs t. Al the chec kered flag, Hamblin took th e w in, foll owed by Walters, Shi m p and Barnes, "Everybody's going wide and I wen t in to the ins ide o f all th e m u d," sa id Hamblin. "Go t me di rt y, but I won the race so it d oesn't matter. Du sty (Wa Iters) is riding really good ou t here. He's tou gh to beat." Moto two mean t another holesh ot for O'Connor. This tim e, O'Conno r stayed tough through most of the first lap, losing on ly one posi tion to Wal ters. On lap two, th e Hamblin attac k bro ugh t hi m from fifth place to third , behind O'Connor . Hamblin rocketed into the inside of a tum, seizi ng second place, and he set his sig hts on Walters . On the las t lap, Walters an d Hamblin were sid e by side fu ll throttle com ing ou t of the back bow l. Both riders broke har d coming into the tu m , bu t Ha mblin was a li ttle fas ter getting back on th e throttle, taking first awa y from Walters.
