Hadsell racked up an impressive th ree wi ns, and his only defeat of the weekend came at th e han d s of up -and -comin g rid er Tr avis Past ran a. Riddle' s performance ' was eq ually as impressive, as he was perfect in the 250cc B Modified class, winning all three motos. Riddle su ffered his onl y defeat in the final 125cc B Modified moto, losing to Kyle Farnell. H owever, Riddle's second pla ce behind Far nell w as still enough for his seco nd wi n on the weekend . More th an 500 rid er s came from a ll over to do battle for th e seven gua ra nteed ga te positions for the AMA National Motocross Championships held at Loretta Lynn's every Au gu st. The three-m ote form at , intense heat and high humidity would put the riders' stamina and skills to the test ove r the two-day event. Tyson H adsell ca me o ut sw inging, taking two moto w in s and a second in the 125cc A class on the way to his first victory of th e w eekend. Fellow Florida rid er Michael Ste ven son used consis tency where it cou nted, finishing third each time out to take seco nd o ve ra ll. Bill y Wood made it a com plete Florida affa ir, guidi ng his Yamaha ove r th e whoopedou t facil ity and go ing 4-7-4 to take the final po diu m position . Mot o two saw Stiles falte r ou t of the ga te, and he was only able to wo rk up. to fifth by th e end o f the m ot o, Enter in g the final mot o in fourth, Stiles knew his chances fo r the overa ll were s lim, but seco n d was s till up for g rabs. Hadsell tried to ma tch th e pace of the Suzuki rid er, bu t Pas trana 's pa ce was just a little qu icker. Th e Cernic's Suzukimounted rider slowly pu lled away eac h time ou t. Hadsell pl ayed second fiddle in the firs t tw o m otos and finis hed third in the final mot o to Dwayne Bone. Bone too k third overall with 3-5-2 finishes . Tea m Green's Ben Riddle wa s read y for action in the 250cc/Open B Modified d ivision. Riddle ga ted in the top five in eac h moto and quickly mad e his wa y to th e front eac h tim e and left the com pe tition to fight over seco nd . Th e o nly rid er to give Rid dl e a run for his money was Perform an ce En gineerin g /Su zuki mounted Kyle Farnell. The N ew Smyrna, Florida, native took second in moto one , stayi ng close eno ugh to ca pitalize on a mi stake but no t close eno ug h to chalIenge for the lead. Moto tw o sa w Farnell get caug ht up in a melee in the first tum. The Flor id a r id er s pen t th e enti re mo to playi ng catch-u p and ended up in four th . In the final moto, Farnell seized the ea rly lead , bu t no t for lo ng, as Riddle m ad e h is move on lap two. Farnell gave chase, but it was to no avail . However, his second in mo to th ree was enough for second ove rall on the day. Thomas Parsons netted third overall wit h his 3-2-5 scores. Ridd le was seemi ngly in control of the 125cc B Mod ified class, ta king the first tw o moto wi ns with rela tive ease. In m oto th re e, Ridd le too k his on ly d efea t of the weeken d. Ga ti n g third behind FarnelI an d Kawasaki-mou nt ed Rya n Davis; Riddle loo ked po ised for a nother w in . Me thodica lly , Rid dl e m o ved in to secon d and th en se t o u t after Farnell. Farnell, on the other ha nd, had ideas of his own, getting out to an early lead . With six seconds separating the tw o co m pe titors, Riddle tried to close th e gap . The next few laps saw th e gap stay the same . Farnell had done what no one else on the weekend cou ld do: defeat Riddle. However, the second place finish for Rid d le was enough fo r the ove ralI. Farnell took seco nd ove ra ll. The Florida rider played catch-up in the final tw o mo tos after a disastrous first . rnoto, which saw hi m finish 12th. In mo to two, FarnelI gated insid e the to p five , la tched on to Riddle's fender and slip ped away from th e rest of the pack for second. The final moto w as Far _nell's best, as he took the win. Ro u n d in g out the t o p th r ee w a s another Florida ride r, Dan Tru man. Tru ma n piloted his Suzuki to 3-4-8 finishes. The only other rider to take two class wi ns was fo rme r AMA Amat eur Na tiona l Cha mpion Kev in Wa lke r. Th e Kingsport, Tennessee, rid er too k the Over 25 A and Fou r-Stroke classes by s to rm . W al ker ripped o ff th ree m ot o wi ns in eac h class. The Four-S troke-c lass wins came very easily, as Walker wo n each moto by more than 30 seconds, Ash eboro, Nort h Ca rolina 's Jason Baldwin took th e runner-up position each time out. Four -Stro ke newco mer Ke vin Blalock a da p ted to h is YZ400 quickly and netted third overall. Walker's w in in the Over 25 A division d id not come as easily. A bad start in th e firs t mot o forced Walker to play ca tch- u p the en tire mot o. H is pace ca rried him to th e w in. In the seco nd moto, Wa lk er fa ltere d ea rly, lea ving him to play ca tch-u p . This tim e the win wou ld not come as easilv, "If tha t guy o~ the Yamaha would n't have fell, I could no t have caught him," said Walker of his com e-from-behin d win . Wal ker wou ld not make the sa m e mistakes in the th ird mo to, jetting away for the win. By Beth LaRo ck SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 13 he third rou nd of the Yamah a Dealer's Series at Glen Helen Racew ay brough t Sen ior Expert racers Ron Tu rner, Bob Ma xw ell , Larry Roesel er and Rex Staten to the starting line for a race seemingly from the past. "It's like bringin g back the Na tiona ls for us," Maxwell said before the first moto. " It' s always g reat to get a turn ou t like th is," added Tu rner, w ho cha rged hard and wo n bo th mot os in the Senior Expert class. No t even 90- plus-degree heat cou ld slow him d ow n. In th e first moto, To ny Schu ler su rprised th e fi eld b y capt u ri n g th e holesh ot. De nnis Boulware, Tu rner and Staten followed . Before the firs t la p wa s over, Sc h uler s till held the lead , bu t Turner, Sta te n, Maxw ell and Roeseler w ere in second through fifth place and quickly closi ng the gap. O n lap two, Turner rocketed down the tree straig h t pas t Schuler, lea ving hi m in a cloud of dust. Th e next tim e an y of the racers would see Tu rn er w as a t the fin ish line .
