(Above) John Long III (36) and Jeff Haldeman (27) finished first and second during SOCc (7-8) short-track action in Hanover, Pennsylvania. (Above right) Jeff Eide won the 125cc class at the final round of the CRC Tri-Race Series, held at Los Angeles County Raceway in Palmdale, California. Gruhn walkin' away in Memphis Motocross By Crew Lincoln MILLINGTON, TN, APR. 24 Maeda the "Donn" of OTHG MX By Chris Sanchirico Miller, Mullen maul 'em at Trail-Way ST MORENO VALLEY, CA, APR. 25 By Len Breech Joumalist Donn Maeda traded in his laptop computer and cushy 17th-story office for a chance to roost with the Over The Hill Gang Expert class. Appearing very comfortable - for an ex-ATV rider - on the technical Starwestlrack, Maeda finished 1-1 en route to the overall class victory. The victory was far from easy, as Maeda had to work hard for the win in both motos. At the start of moto one, it was perennial holeshot artist Tim McEntee at the front of the pack. In tow was the Daniel Bush-prepped YZ400 of Maeda, Steve Pialloni, and White Brothers/Troy Lee-backed Chris Sanchirico. At the end of lap one, it was Maeda seizing the lead from McEntee, followed by Piaittoni and Sanchirico. Out front, Maeda proceeded to check out with a firm lock on the lead. The battle for third began to heat up, with McEntee. Pialloni and Sanchirico jockeying lor position. Sanchirico grabbed too much throttle exiting a turn and did a 360 before hilling the dirt, pulling himself at the back of the field. The battle for second was still a dogfight, with KJ( rider Bruce Criswell entering the fray as well. Criswell battled his way into second but performed a spectacular get-off on a massive tabletop. A set of broken handlebar mounts ended his day. Eric Dorkfin replaced Criswell in the fight for runner-up honors. With McEntee still holding second, Dorklin worked his way around. both Pialloni and McEntee to claim second place. With one turn to go, Piattoni stuffed McEntee to claim third at the checkers.' McEntee courageously held on to fourth after injuring his foot while casing a double. As the gate dropped for the second mato, it was the RM of Pialloni leading the way, with Charlie Gilmore, Dorkfin and Sanchirico giving chase. A third of the way into the first lap, an overanxious Dorkfin tried to triple a jump in heavy traffie and landed directly on top of Gilmore in a horrifying crash that took both riders out of the race. Gilmore ended up with a broken wrist and a sore body. Piattoni was out in front, unaware of the carnage behind him. Sanchirico held second, and Maeda held third. Soon Maeda began to pressure Sanchirico for second, and after two laps of intense pressure from the thundering fourstroke, Maeda worked his way past, selling his sights on first-placed Piattoni. The lead was shortly Maeda's, as he cruised to the checkers uncontested. Piattoni's 2-2 rewarded him with second overall, and Bennet's 5-3 was good enough for third. Results BEe: l.
