Coms Photo by Dewn W1nczewskl BRUSH, co, APR. 18 The inaugural 1999 AMA/District 25 State Championship Series, hosted by the Rocky Mountain Motocross Association and featuring double points for all classes and 200-percent Pro payout, made its first stop of the season at Sweney Cycle Park, where Fay Meyers/Cortez Trucking/Pro Action/Bridgestone-sponsored Wes Hale hooked up for a I-I perfonnance in the 125cc A class. Hale ran flag to flag for the win in the first 125cc A.<:Jass moto, but not without a fight from Trent Hansen and Chad Zuli ..n. As Hale grabbed the holeshot, Hansen placed his Honda in second, with Zulian and Matt Karlsen following. Hale and Zulian went bar to bar through the eight-jump rhythm section, with Hale gaining the advantage. Karlsen slipped a couple of positions back aboard his YZI25. With Zulian hounding Hale, Hansen had his hands full fending off a hard-charging Kevin Hall. By the third lap, Hale was able to pull out a three-second lead while Hall got past Hansen and started to reel in Zulian. Karlsen, who had fallen back to sixth, jumped up to fifth with a pa~ over Adam Nazarenus over the fmish-line jump. Hall used the power of his F&S Suzuki to blaze through the rhythm section and get within pouncing distance of Zulian. Hall made his attack for the position stick two laps from the finish with a classic block-'pass over Zulian as he squared the comer and launched. over the spec* tator tabletop jump in second place. Zulian then had to contend with Hansen, "and the two hanged bars on the white-flag lap. Hansen was finally denied the position as he was blockpassed by Zulian four corners from the finish and had to let off. Hale enjoyed a clean five-second buffer at the checkers as Hall, Zulian, Hansen and Karlsen followed. As Hall sat out moto two with an injured foot, Hansen rocketed from the gate and railed out of tum one, with Hale alongside. Hansen's lead was short-lived, however, as Hale assumed the position. Hale held down a two-second lead as Hansen, Zulian, Karlsen, Nazarenus, Yamaha-mounted Eric johnson and Dave Ford filed into order. Hansen and Zulian were running close when tragedy struck for Hansen: He £Jew across the high-speed start-chute area and entered a slick off-camber left-hander a.nd his CRI25 lost traction, sending him to the ground in a hard-cartwheeling get-off. Fortunately, Hansen got up uninjured, but he decided to call it a day. With too much of a deficit to make up, Zulian settled into second as Hale continued to pull away. Hale eventually pulled out a 10-second lead at the finish. A race for third developed between Nazarenus and Karlsen, with the two rounding the circuit wheel to wheel. Karlsen held on for the final podium spot, but only two seconds ahead of Nazarenus. Hale earned the overall, with ZuIian, Karlsen, Nazarenus and johnson rounding out the top five. Results 50 0-1: 1. MAY I Tom Hofmaster, aboard a Banzai Racing-backed Suzuki, opened the Miller Genuine Draft Megacross eight-race series with a come-frombehind charge to the checkers in the 250cc A class. Hofmaster stayed on the gas after the high-speed straightaway past the starting gate and whipped through the high-banked switchback. Twice - once in the first lap of the 250cc qualifier, the other in the first lap of the main Hofmaster dropped his RM250. Both times he remounted at the back of the pack'. '1 got up as fast as I could:' said Hofmaster. '1 knew I had to ride fast, so I kept the throttle on. Finally I got up to Roy (Nafzger) and was able to get around. Roy was riding re.111y good and leading the class in the later laps. Greg Brat was going good, too, until he Co:1ught a comer in the last lap and went down." In other race action, 7·year-old Joe Tarver won the 50cc Senior class on a quiet but hardrunning Cobra. "I've been mostly winning since I started riding," said Joe, who has been riding for two years, "but I like the 60cc class better because they go faster and I can jump higher." Anthony Weber did not take the lead in the 14- to 24-year-old class until the white-flag lap, when he passed Mike Spencer for the point. "It was a good race," said Weber. "My front end washed out in the early laps and I had to work my way back. This was the first good start I've got all day, and it wasn't all that hard. I didn't try to follow anybody else's lines; I just took what they gave me and went with it." Andy Stacy led Todd Sheedy off the line and went straight to the checkers in the Over 25 class. Dean Sheldon and Chris 5chmulbach were third and fourth. Ty Tyrrell was first off the line in the 65cc class, and he said he would be back and hoped to win them all this year. Brock Murphy had a problem off the gate when an anxious throttle hand caused him to hit the gate and loop it. Murphy recovered and brought it home for second, behind Tyrrell. Philo Petricig. whose goal is to be a leading lady of motocross, came in third. In Over 30 A competition, Andy Stacy did a tank slapper coming out of a switchback that culminated in a monstrous wheeJie. Stacy lcept right on motoring for his second main-event win of the evening. Meanwhile, Mark Wright won the Over 30 B class. "I can't say enough about the track,· said Wright. "It was great tonight. Anyway, I never complain when I'm winning."
