Events Victory Sports MX Series Horton rules Calsonic By Randy ~ansom SHELBYVILLE, TN, JAN. 23 obbie Horton won both the 125cc A and 250cc A-class finals during the second of two nights of racing at Victory Sports Racing's indoor winter motocross series, held inside the Calsonic Arena. The sellout crowd witnessed 27 action-packed main events, highlighted by the Pro classes and a jump contest. In the 125cc A final, Kentucky rider Rodney Carrier grabbed the holeshot aboard his KTM, followed by RMmounted Todd Bennick and KX pilot Clark Stiles. Horton was slow off the line, but he charged through the field to quickly jump into the fray at the front of the pack. By the end of la p two, Carrier had dropped back a few positions and Bennick had assumed the lead. Bennick was on the gas and he built up a two-second lead almost immediately. By this time, Horton passed Carrier and was pressuring Stiles, who put up a strong fight. A few laps later, Stiles left the door light!y open and Horton took full advantage, moving into second. YZ riders Scott Graves and Devin Banks were also on the gas, and they motored past Carrier. Graves went on to pass Stiles as the mota was winding down, but Banks was holding in. fifth. Meanwhile, Horton closed in on Bennick as the two riders threaded their way through lapped traffic. With three laps remaining in the 12-lap final, Horton dived inside a lapped rider entering the whoops and passed Bennick at the same time. When the checkers came out, it was Horton, followed by Bennick, Graves, Stiles and Banks. In 50cc (7-8) action, Bradley B;"nch powered his Cobra into the lead but quickly made a miscue that allowed D.J. Ellis to take over the lead. By the beginning of lap three, Bunch had muscled his way into the lead once again and was never again headed. Hunter Inman put on a charge during this time and closed in on the lead duo, but he had to settle for third. The top three riders exhibited skill that belied their years as they mastered many of the double jumps and hammered the whoops like seasoned veterans. As the six-lap mota wounc;l down, Bunch pulled an eight-second lead over Ellis, who in tum extended the gap over the third-place rider to three seconds. At the finish, the order was Bunch, Ellis, Inman and Preston Seratt, followed by Cody Reas. The 85cc 02-13) class put on an exciting show as Douglas Thomason jammed his KX80 into the lead entering the first tum and never looked back. YZ-mounted Ty Conway was on the gas, but he never got the opportunity to make a serious run at Thomason, who kept a solid lead throughout the mota. Third-place finisher Shawn Clark was in command of third place until lap three, when he took a small soil sample and let Honda-mounted Blake Arrowood by. As the mota entered lap five, Clark passed Arrowood and closed the gap on Conway, who was three sec- R Zach Osborne (38) grabs the holeshot in the 65cc (7-9) race over Justin Ashburn (13N), Hunter Inman (H1) and Jacob Patterson at Victory Sports Racing's . indoor motocross in Shelbyville, Tennessee. onds behind the leader. Conway picked up the pace and both riders closed the gap on Thomason, but the KX rider held on for the win. The final Pro-class event of the weekend was the much-anticipated 250cc A final. Horton nabbed the holes hot, followed by Graves and RM-mounted Matt Shue. Shue passed Graves at the beginning of lap two and set his sights on Horton's YZ. Horton was putting on an impressive show as he attacked the track. Not to be outdone was Shue, who matched Horton's pace move for move, lap after lap. While the lead was up for grabs, Stiles was closing on Graves, who was running third. Fifth place was occupied by Bennick, who was also charging toward the fron t after a lackluster start. By midmota, the leaders had encountered lapped traffic, which allowed Horton to extend his lead to about four seconds over Shue. The running order of the top five remained the same for the next four laps, but beginning on lap 10, Stiles was all over Graves, trying to force a mistake. Graves held tough and never faltered. At the mota's end, Horton took an uncontested win over Shue, Graves, Stiles and Bennick. eN Calsonic Arena Shelbyville, Tennessee Results: January 23, 1999 Friday 50 SHAFT: 1.
