Nashville Powercross: Nashville Municipal Auditorium lVIusic City By Chris Deutschen NASHVILLE, TN,JAN. 15ยท16 t was a great day in the Music City when On-Trac Events brought the America's Motorsports/ elson Mazda-sponsored Powercross to the Nashville MUJucipal Auditorium - a great day for Moto Planet/ AI Lane Yamaha-sponsored Robbie Horton, that is. Horton used hi years of experience winning Amateur National Championships at Loretta Lynn's and contesting the 125cc East Supercross Series to dominate both night of racing, winning e:very event that he entered, including the Dash For Cash and the jump contest. This is not to say that the competition wa weak. Oark Stiles, Matt Shue and Scotty Graves gave Horton everything that he could handle on both nights, but Horton was just too strong. Using technical riding that turned singles into doubles and doubles into triples, Horton was able to put just enough distance on the pack to secure the wins. The festivities started off on Thursday evening with a display of riding skill a co-promoter and former World Supercross Champion Jim Holley proceeded to wheelie up and down Broadway in front of the NASCAR Cafe in downtown Nashville in order to hype the event. For the old-school fans, it brought back memories of jUJ1ior high school daydream and days long since passed. On Friday evening, the races officially kicked off in front of an almost full house. The Nashville Municipal Auditorium, which is a state-of-the-art arena, had not seen a crowd of this magnitude in years, and co-promoter Rob Hansen did a great job of constructing a quality course in the tight confines of the auditorium. Peery's Kawasaki's Clark Stiles kicked off the first night by taking the holeshot in the 125cc main, ahead of Horton and local boy Scotty Graves. Horton was not going to wait around, and he immediately started to pressure Stiles for the lead. At the close of the first lap, it looked like Horton was going to be able to make the pass for the lead over the dual double jumps, but Stiles rode a tight line and held Horton off. Horton was not to be denied, though, and coming out of the whoops he made the pass for the lead and what would be the win. Stiles still had his hands full as Graves and Matt Shue pushed for the second spot. In the end, Stiles rode a consistent race to secure the second spot, ahead of a charging Shue and Graves. Yamaha rider Justin Tiearney had the fastest throttle hand at the start of Friday's 250cc main, as he held a tight line through the first corner and over the (Left) Robbie Horton was the top finisher, taking wins in the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes in powercross action in Nashville, Tennessee. (Above) Clark Stiles diced with Horton the entire weekend, but he was only able to pull off one win, during Friday night's 125cc main event. The cro",d on Saturday was just as large and just as enthusiastic as that on Friday as Horton, riding high from his Friday sweep, added a 125cc main-event holeshot to his list of triumphs. With clear sailing up front, Horton was able to place a nice cushion between himself and the rest of the pack to ta ke an uncontested win. The usual suspects followed behind the flying Horton, with Shue in second, desperately trying to make up ground on the rapidly disappearing leader, followed by Jon Boruff and Stiles, who wa trying to make up for a mistake earlier in the race. Boruff tried everything he could to hold off Stiles, tc1 no avail. With four laps to go, Stiles made the pass heading into the rhythm section to clinch third. Having wired the tart, Horton again . jumped out to an early lead by cutting a tight inside line and rolling the finishline double. Riding high on the confidence of winning every moto he entered over the weekend, Horton quickly charged out front and spent the next 11 laps styling for the cameras. Clark Stiles finally got a good start; unfortunately, Horton's was better, relegating Stiles to the runner-up position. Shue suffered a fifth-place tart, and by the time he made the pass for third place, Horton and Stiles were long gOn1~, forcing Shue to settle for third in front of eN a consistent Jon Boruff. Nashville Municipal Auditorium Nashville, Tennessee Results: January 15-16, 1999 massive finish-line doubles. Tiearney was riding a high from having held off Horton for every lap of the Dash For Cash - except the one that counted. However, his lead was short-lived, as both Horton and Shue pushed the pace and made the pass. Shue stuck close to Horton for five laps, sticking his front wheel in whenever he could. Horton remained cool under fire and gradually pulled away from Shue to take an uncon tested win. Back in the pack, Tiearney was holding his own against a charging Stiles, but one small mistake was all Stiles needed to make the pass and take the final podium position. Suzuki-mounted .
