Well over 100 riders braved the cold weather to
challenge the near-perfect track as the Lodj
Motorcycle Club hosted its second pf three
marathons at the historic clubgrounds.
G C riders Billy Martin, Steve Mayfield,
Gary Rogers, Shaun Russell and
Nate Wait were among those rid~
ers who contested the approxi~
mateJy I-mile course. Grand Prix
road racer Matt Wait al 0 campaigned the race track" Of the six,
Russell fini"hed the highest, placing second in the 250cc class, \vith
36 laps.
"It was good," Russell said. "I
went there to get a litUe training.
An hour and a half is a long time,
and I really didn't keep tracJ, of
the laps. I really eJ1joyed it, and it
was a lot of fun."
Iron man Steve Mayfield.
with co-rider Paul Polhemus, finished behind Russell and then
also finished fourth in the Open
dass.
"The track was typical Lodi
Marathon: tight and hard to pass,
but lots of fun," Mayfield said. "My partner and
I each feU on.ce in the 250 race, but we were
never able to catch Shaun (Russell), as he never
faltered. This race was good practice for the
upcoming Nationals."
Rogers and Nate Wait teamed up with lessthan-perfect luck in the Open class, as they were
forced out on lap three.
"We rode Gary Roger's bike, and got up to
about third," Wait said. "The shifter kept slipping on the spline and we kept missing shifts:'
Despite being out of contention in the 2SOcc
race, Rogers and Wait took full advantage of the
fact that Wairs house was only a few miles from
the Lodi Cycle Bowl.
"We drove home to ate's house to get an
Open-class bike to ride in the next race," Rogers
said. '1 started the race and got us up to third,
then handed the bike over to Nate. He ran about
three laps and moved into first, then clipped a
hay bale and bent the brake pedal. When we
tried to bend it back, it broke in two. Today just
wasn't our day, but we'll be back at the January
24 Marathon and run both classes."
Motocrosser Dennis Kritzer emerged the big
winner, as he powered his Bieffe-backed Yamaha wire to wire in the 250cc cl
