Martys win Christmas GP By Kirk Chandler CARLSBAD, CA, DEC. 13 Once again, Carlsbad raceway played host to the annual Christmas Grand Prix, this time sponsored !?y Moto World of EI Cajon and CMXR. Riders in attendance were out to have a good· time on the nicely prepared course that included parts of the old USGP track, the drag strip aIld the old superbi.kers' track. The big winners on the day were Marty Smith and Marty Moates, who both consi~tently showed the fast way around the track . Marty Smith grabbed the lead of the Vet race early on, followed by Expert rider Jon-Jon Belisle and Bob Weber. Smith, still showing his speed from yesteryear, pulled away from the pack and did not look back. Belisle ran first in the Expert class, with Jeff Surwall a close second and Moates in third. As Smith roared his YZ250 down the drag strip, Moates made his move past Belisle and Surwall to claim second overall, first Expert. Behind Moates came Belisle, Surwall and a slew of otber Vet racers who would eventually become lappers. Midway through the 4S-minute Vet race, Moates appeared to be in control of the Expert class, but he was actually losing time due to lapped traffic. SurwaU had made his move on Belisle and was gaining on Moates. Weber stili ran second in the Pro class, but he was being outdone by the top three Expert ci . riders. Smith maIlaged to get five laps of riding out of the 45-minute mota and lapped more ~ than half the field before he took the checkers. :::I Weber finished second in the Pro class, behind C USGP her'o Moates, who won the Expert class aIld later in the day captured the victory in the Vet 40 Masters division, making him a double .,. '" .., '" 36 class winner. Following Moates were Surwall and Belisle. The team race was the final race of the day and also the most awe-inspiring, with competitors dodging one another as they switched riders. The race was spUt into Novice and Expert divisions, and everyone was encouraged to ride. The Expert class took off from the lille first, with Dustin Nelson taking the lead, foUowed by John Knight. The two lead riders pulled a surprising lead over the third-placed team by the first lap. As Nelson came into the pits to pass the band to his partner Thomas Englehardt, the lead duo had a healthy lead. The Novice-class competition was a match of Ed Christia.nsen and John Taylor vs. the team of Grieb and MalmqUist. Meanwhile, Dustin Watson, Knight's partner, gave chase to Englehardt aIld eventually passed the local racer before i7laking another rider switch. Englehardt closed the gap on the drag strip due to the brute force of his YZF400, compared to Watson's YZl2S. The close race made the rider switch interesting, as both riders stormed into the transfer zone within inches of one another. The Knight/Watson team got out of the pits first, with Nelson on his blue rear fender. NelSon, of the fastest of the leading teams, pulled a gap on Knight, but not one that would hold up when the hard-charging Watson took up the chase on the final and deciding lap. Watson reeled in Englehardt and made the pass to win the race. As fait would have it, Watson and Knight were a little lucky that they did not have to hold off the advances of Nelson for another lap. The Novice class, on the other hand, was dominated by the Christiansen/Taylor team. They pulverized the field, lead ing every lap of the race. The action in the Novice class was for second place, between the team of Grieb and Malmquist and the third-placed team of Seinz and Howard. Neither team was willing to hold back, because the event was the final race of the day. On the final lap, the Seinz/Howard team managed to get around their competitors and stay in front of the Grieb/Malmquist team all the way-to the finish tine. Res,!lts 80 BEC: I. Tyler Keefe (Yam); 2.
