By B.J. Smith
PO TLAND, MI, SEPT. 13
R
Fresh off the 12Sec AMA National circu it, Nick
Wey came home to Michigan and swe pt all four
motus in the 125 and 250cc Pro-Am classes a t the
first ann ual "From The Heart Inc," benefi t race.
With a combined pu rse of $7000, his wi ns w ere
anything but a cakewa lk, as man y of the Michigan Maria riders came to claim their share of the
prize.
The 12See class had the most intense action.
with Kelly Smith pladng his KTM out in fro nt
at the start of moto one and with David Gay lord
and Matt Maxim off close behind. Smith quickly
pulled a l D-bike-length lead on the hu ngry pack
behind him . Perhaps too exd ted to get to the
fini sh , Smit h found himself facin g the wrong
way on lap tw o. Maximoff took the lead position and Smith dropped back to fourth. After a
mi d pa ck s ta r t, Wey spent th e fir st few laps
cha rging through th e crowd before moving into
third behind Randy Valade. Valade and Wey
qu ickly closed in on Maximoff, who was spo rting a ha n ging cl u tc h le ver. As Max imoff
dropped off the pace, W ey made his move on
Va la de . Now o ut fron t, We y qui c k ly los t
Valad e, who was feelin g the heat from a latecharging Smith. Smith di spla ced Valade on lap
seven and attemp ted to ro n down the Pro Circuit Kawasa ki of Nick Wey. At the checkers, it
was Wey wit h a five-seco nd lead ove r Smith.
Tra iling Smit h in third 'w as Valade, w ho was
followed by Ga ylor d , with John Grewe in th e
fifth spo t.
Moto two saw Hudsonville, Michigan's own
Todd DeHoop nail the ho leshot, wit h Maxim off,
Gay lo rd , Sm it h, Va lade, We yand Jere m y
Booh er close in tow . DeHoop wasted no time,
pulling a three-second lead ov er his com pe tition . Smith dropped ou t of contention on la p
one after smashing his face into the handlebars.
Back in fourth, Wey had trouble making hi s
move around Gaylord, while DeHoop continued
to pull away. After finall y pass ing Gaylord on
lap three, Wey qu ickly squ eaked by an unsuspecting Maxim off and set his SighL< on DeH oop.
In less than half a lap, Wey crushed DeH oop's
lead and eas ily mo tored by. With six laps lef( to
go, Wey easily pu lled ou t a IDsecond lead to
wi n moto tw o ov e r sec on d · p laced Gay lo rd .
Valad e finished third, with DeHoop and Ma ximoff round ing ou t the top five.
