Kansas. On a hot, dry day in Kansas, Sm ith se t his sig hts on Jeff Hedden and Mar c Giffo rd , and, in the first mote, Smith found himself behind Hedden off the start. Hedden kep t his Yamaha out fro nt. wi th Smith, Gif ford, Dennis Burnett and Chuck Diebold following, At the half way po int , Hedden had pulled aw ay. and Smith was now tryi ng to keep Cif· ford out of the second spot, which Smith managed to accomplish . Th e checkered flag ca me out for Hed den, and he was followed by Smith, Giffo rd , Burn ett , Diebo ld and Ben Thompson. Th e seco nd malo started with Hedden and Sm ith side by side going into the first tu rn . By the next turn, Sm ith took the ins ide line aw ay from Hedden to ta ke the lead. Hedden push ed Smith hard e very lap, ge tt ing close th ro ug h som e section s of the track and losing gro u nd in ot her sections. Mean wh ile, Gifford held on to a solid third , and Diebold passed Burnett for the fourt h spot. Hedden ma d e on e la s t push through the last two turns, but the fron t end of his bike washed ou t, a nd Smi th he ld on to the win. Smith took the o ve ra ll, w ith Hedd en settling for second . Gifford, Diebold, Burne tt and Thompson filled the top six posi tio ns. In the 250cc Pro clas s, Hedden came out on top, followed by Gifford , Rick Co tton and Smith. Results r / w : 1. C ,J R,.'vin g (Hun], Ricketts takes Trail of Tears By Lance Mart in JONESBORO, IL ,JULY19 The Little Egypt Off-Road Motorcycle Clu b hosted round five of the Mid-Sou th Summer Series a t the Trail of Tears Lod ge and Spo r ts Resort, and som e 111 riders showed up to do battle o n the 8-mi le loop. The racers we re greeted by dear skies and dose-to-trip le-di git temperatur es, and the d u b added a cou ple of single-track tra ils an d ano ther creek section to welc ome the rid ers from the South. Indian ' s S had Ricketts pu t h is Mod ern Tire /Bridgestone /Cyclepath-sponsored YZ-lOO int o the creek firs t with the lead, with previous Tra il of Tears winner Chri s Graber giving chase. "1 went into the creek in first place, led for a little bit, then missed a com er an d lost the lead to Graber: ' said Ric ke tt s la ter. "I follo w ed Graber for a wh ile and then missed the trail and los t about 30 seconds." Gary Hendricks wasn't letting the heat bother hi m as he ra n behind Graber for the first two la ps. Ric ketts, t ho ugh, fo u n d the t ra il and wo r ked his wa y by Graber and He ndricks on lap three . " I just tr ied to ride steady an d managed to get back aro u nd everyone and win by a few secon ds ," he said . "The trail was probably the most fun of the series 50 far." Tim Bak er mad e it tw o in a row a t Tra il of Tears as he held off Mark Barton a t the end for the win in the 250cc B class . "Bar ton a nd me w er e s w apping p laces all d ay," Bak er said . " It was good to race with Bar· ton like that." Baker wins the sports mans hip awa rd for the day. "Barton was in fron t of me an d he blew bv a tu rn in a faster part of the course," Baker s...id~ "I . 1 slowed a bit unt il he go t back on course ." Dallas Mayer put in a good rid e to win the Vet class. Ma yer also finis he d eighth overall.
