Don Frauenberger 's Yamaha led the Vintage 250cc riders into the first ma in of the nigh t, wi th Horton, Manley Crommet and Bruce Reyn old s hot on his w hee ls. Crommet and Reynolds both stuffed insi de Ho rto n, dropping him to fourt h. Fra ue nbe rger low- sided in tum two , slowing Reynolds, and Horton slipped aro un d, working up to second an d gaining on Crommet, the new lea der. Reynold s trailed in third , joined by Pa t Dwyer an d Ch uck Cla yton. Ho rto n hu gged the pole in one and two, sliding ahead of Crommet to take the top spot Dwyer sta lled in three and four, se tting the fin ish o rde r of Ho rt on, Crommet, Reyno lds, Clayton and Loren Bj rkman, w ho was o compe ting in his first race in quite a while. Horton, switc hing to a Honda, also took top ho no rs in t he Vin tage 600cc class, ahead of Fra ue nberger, Brad Spen cer and Richard Pollock, who , with Spence r, narrowly missed a pileup when Jim Gardner lost traction while chasing Fraue nbe rger. Gard ner careened in to the wa ll a nd collected Br u ce Reyno ld s . Both ride rs walked away, w hi le Ho rton , Fraue nberger, Spencer and Pollock took the checkered flag. The trend for the even ing continued as Horton climbe d on his Ossa and led the brakeless C lassic 250cc ra ce, a head o f Jim Mc M u r ren, Vince Gra ves and Rich Trai t, who shot u nd er Graves and McMu rre n befor e losing traction an d sliding out d irectly under McMurre n. The inciden t put both riders o n the ground ha rd , br inging o ut the red flag, They were up and ru nning shortly, with a rep lay of the first start. First Graves and then Trait pa ssed McMur· f en and latched on to Horton's fender, the trio r un n ing nose to tail to the fin ish , t railed by McMurre n and Ceci l Oswald. . During a break in the program, speed wa y racer Eddie Cast ro, on Bob Nichols' beau tifu l 1940 Indi an twin racer, had a matc h race w ith speed legend Don Vesco, who was aboa rd Gordo n Menzies ' immacula te Royal Enfield sin g le. Cas tro had a bit of trou ble w ith the backward ha nd -s hif t / foot-d utch di rt tracker, givin g th e sta rt to Vesco. Castro ca ug ht up and made it a race, jus t as Vesco low-sid ed in tu m one. On the restart, Vesco once agai n go t the u pper hand, but Cas tro was soo n pushing him and passed w ith a classic slide job in turn two to take the lead . Castro then slid wid e, a llowi ng Vesco the , eded to reta ke the lead and hold on roo m he ne for the w in .
