Prieto moved up to second p lace bu t wa s un ab le to wo rk his way aroun d the lead er. And with only two laps to go, the crowd was not certa in if they could expect the reigning cham p ion to be d ethro ned . But Prieto pu lled out in the end , swin ging by Manusu thakis to take the lead at the wh ite flag and ultimat ely taking his ninth victory. By the third lap, Manusuthakis had claimed the lead , and he was able to hold back t he co mpetiti on all the wa y to the chec kere d flag. The battle for victo ry in the Expert GTZ Cl lSS was even mo re fierce. There was a mad scramb le for the lead a t the s ta rt , and by lap tw o Ma nusuthaki s was ou t front, lea d ing Re tcher and Mike Ciccotto. Tha t three- wa y batt le for the lead las ted for the en tir e first half of the race, with the th ree lead ers constantly swapping pos i· tion.•. Co lin Gilbert, meanwhile, had picked his w a y up throu gh th e p ac k and pa ss ed b ot h Manusuthakis and Aetcher, and had now set his sights on Ciccotto. Positions co ntinued to be swa p ped behind Ciccotto un til he went into turn five too hot and low-sid ed , se nd ing bo th himself a nd his bike slid ing off the track. He went hom e with wins in Unlimi ted Su perbike and GTI. During the first half of the Expe rt GTI contest , he had to fight off jamie Bowman as the two frequently swapped positions. But Bowman dropped ou t aft er cras h ing in turn one abou t halfw ay through the race, and Prieto scored the easy win . Rick Naru p led the pack aro un d the track for the firs t half of the Unli m ited Su perbike race, wi th Pri e to chasing hi m a nd ste p ping up the pace. Schul tz, from Mari on, Iowa, entered his bad a nd beau tifu l Harl ey in th ree classes an d won th e m all whil e ta kin g on ly one rid e in eac h class . His time in the Pushrod class, moreover, was the fast est time of the d ay in ama teu r cornpetition. Wheelwright had an eve n bett er d ay, e as he picked up fou r class wins un th re dif fer.. en t bikt.'S wh ile setting new altitude record s on his paten ted fun ~ t hro ttle , jumps over the top. Wh eelwrig ht ' s ti me in the Ope n Two-Strok e Exhibitio n class was the overa ll fast tim e for the day. Schultz 's first win on his 1235cc fire-b reathing stro ker in the Ope n class Clme after a star tling 2.776-second run on the 130-foot hill on his first attemp t of the d ay, which allowed him to take the class lead and set a new fast time a t that poin t of the actio n. Bob Fish er was the on ly other rider in the class to break the thrre-second ba rr ier, a nd he did it on his firs t rid e on his Superior Cycle Sportster with a 2.912 for second place. It was to be a Harl ey d a y in the Pushrod class also, as Schul tz blitzed the hill even faster, flying his Sports ter high and far over the top in a brea thtaki ng 2.750 seconds to take that class \\in and set an even fasler time for the day. "Flyin' " Bob Fisher came within a hundredth of a second of ma tching Schul tz, how ever, as he launched a high- flying ride of his own , stopp ing the clock in 2.760 seco n ds o n h is hot -ro d Harley. Kaleb Nort hru p had not yet been beaten in the d istrict Push rod class in 1998, a nd he wa s fast on his Triu m ph twin also, turnin g an excelle nt 2.856 seconds, bu t he had to settle for third place on th is d ay. With temperatures hoverin g in the high 90s, the AMP crew was put to the test in keepin g the track up to th eir high sta nd ards . In ad d ition, so me of the nearly 160 rid er s had to read just t heir usual "'Ho ll is te r habits," as t hey we re greeted to a reverse-direction track. Moto one sta rted off with H onda ~mount ed David McCandless gra bbing the huleshot ahead o f Mitch Wea th erl y, j onn y Garci a, Rich ard Ad ams and OJrrell Bur r. Handelin had her work cut out for her as a bad start had left her in th e back o f the p ack . Up front , McCand less o pe ned up a siza ble lead until th e third la p, when Weath erly and Handelin (who had meticulou sly weaved her way thro ugh the pack) were right on his tail. Hand elin made her move on the d ownhill "ele va to r ju m p:' ou tju m ping both Weath erly and McCandless to take the lead.
