Op en ing n ig ht at New Cha mpion Speedway gave Warren Diem a nd Lenn y Mc Bride their first victori es of the speed way season. Diem and McBrid e both won their handicap hea ts fairly ea sily but, un der a new AMA transfer forma t, they had to go head to head in the se m ifi na l ha ndicap rat her than goi ng to a lternat e semis . This set up one of the closest races of the event, with Diem, McBride and Joe 5ephton occupying the back lines. Sephton wa s the fir s t to ge t by the sho rt yard -liners on lap thr ee, wi th Diem and McBride closel y behin d. Diem, from the outside line, a nd the Tony B Ti re / Anton 's Pizzeria-sponso red Mcbrid e, from the inside, challen ged Seph ton in side- by-side action . 5ephton held them off un til the final lap, when Diem pulled a slight lead out of turn four. As 5ep hto n drif ted wide, McBride stayed insid e to tak e second behi nd Diem . The hand icap final was nea rly a carbon co py of the se mi. Die m, Mc Brid e, Se phton, George Lazor and Bru ce Nelso n we re all o n the 4D- and SD-yard lin es, with Tim Mathewson o n th e 20. Ma thew son held the lead for tw o laps befor e Se p h to n a n d Di em go t by e xi t ing turn tw o . Go ing in to turn th ree , how ever, Nelson didn' t ge t it sid eways and he w ent down, taking Ma thewso n wi th him and brin gin g out the red flag. On the restart, Math ewson held the lead, but it w as s hor t- lived . Se p hton agai n too k o ve r but wa s qu ickly challenge d by McBride a nd Diem . 5ephton held the lead by a mere bike length for three laps. Then, en tering turn one on lap four, Diem drove hard o n the ins ide, for cing Sephto n to drift o ut an d creat e the o peni ng Diem ne eded to take the lead, Us ing the same tacti c, McBrid e too k over seco nd in the sa me tu rn on the final lap. A str ange tu rn of events took place in scra tch racing as four top riders - McBrid e, Diem , Len Dillon an d Gene Bonsigno re · failed to transfer ou t of the semis. Howt.-vcr, d ue to ano the r A MA ru le change unfam iliar to the E.'lst Coast, a fifth rider is no w added to the scrat ch main event. A consolation wa s set up featuring tho se rid ers - a race that cou ld hav e bee n a main event on any o ther eve ning - with onl y the winner going to the main. Diem held the pole, with McBride, Dill on and Bon signore gati ng fro m two, three and four. Off the sta rt, McBride squeezed ahead of Diem bu t drifted slightly on the exit of tu rn tw o, a llow ing Diem an opening and th e lead do wn the b.'lck straig ht. Out of tum four, Diem rt.'turned th e favor as he c~ ug ht tr acti o n that too k h im to the o u ts id e lane . McBride sta yed tight to the pipe an d for the next three la ps wa s nev er more tha n a wheel leng th ahea d, but tha t was eno ug h to give him the w in a nd the fina l tra nsfer spot to the main even t. Lining up for the ma in wa s McBrid e, Sep hto n, Ne lso n, Lazor and Tom Burge. Thc riders wer e so close heading int o turn o ne off the start tha t Bur ge had no p lace t ~ go bu t d o w n, his crash brin ging out the red flag.
