I I Phillips takes Arkport dice run lRAVEL CRAFT I By Michael Harasmisz ARKPORT, NY,jUNE 7 Bria n Phillips turned in a high score w ith his rolls of the dice to take the overall win at the Arkport Dice Run. More than 470 riders turned out to ride the 25--milecourse, which was made up of tig h t and open trails, w ith many water crossings tied together with some large u phills and downhills. The co u rse provided enough challenge for the Experts and was fun for everyone else . The inaugu ral event raised $4720 for the American Cancer Society, w hile eve nt sponsors Arkport Cycles, Parts Unlimited, Moose Racing, KJ< Cycle Supply and Tucker Rocky provided prizes to riders finding marked arrows on the trail. J'1 When th e ru n was s tarte d, local pro motocrossers Joe Ellington, Mike Ha rasm isz and Bria n Wellman were the first to head into the woods as the large grou p of riders followed. The riders were gree ted with excellen t weather and trail cond itions, and the trail had four checks where riders rolled the dice. When the riders came into the final checkpoint, man y had such a grea t time tha t they went out to ride another loop. _ After all the riders were in and the scores were tallied , Phillips turned in the highest score, followed by Eric Hardwood and P.J. Tremper. A special low-score award we nt to Tim Cole. Even t organ izer Gordy Ko es ter was very pleased with the turnout and with how smoothly the event ran. Hannold handles final at Hungry Valley Motocross By Paul Kellen GORMAN,CA,JUNE 14 The final rou nd of th e sse Brick Nation a ls, held at the Hun g ry Valley SVRA, saw Chris H a nnol d take th e overa ll wi n in the 250cc Intennediate d iv ision. At the d rop of the gate in mo to one, White Brother$/FMF I O 'Neal-backed Hanno ld nabb ed the ho les h ot, followed closely b y Damon Biven s and Darrin Hoeft . The t h ree qui ckly p ut d istan ce on th e rest of th e fiel d and completed the first lap in that order, b u t Hannold was able to p ut a three-secon d cushion be tween himself and Bivens . Bivens, who is recu perati ng from a hard fall that resulted in a strained chest muscle, had his hands full with Hoeft. Fou r laps into the race, Hannold had a slim five-seco nd lead, followed closely by the battlin g duo of Bivens and Hoeft. The race bet w een Bivens a nd H oe ft for second p lace raged the entire moto, wi th the two rid- ers swap pi ng posit ions th rougho ut . When it was a ll said and do ne, Hannold took the che ckered fl ag ahea d of 'Bivens, followed closely by Hoeft . The remaining top five was filled ou t by Norberto DeBernard i and Rafael Means. Moto two was almost an exact rep eat of the firs t moto, wi th Hannold again grabbi ng the holesho t ahead of Bivens and Hoeft. Bivens, who was riding two classes with his inj ur y, was un ab le to reta liate from a late-mota pa ss and had to settle for third beh ind Hoeft. Hannold, of course, claimed the overall win , while Hoeft (3-2) stole second from Biven s (2-3). Anot her good race occurred in t he Vet Novice cla ss. As the rid ers rounded the first tum, it wa s Tom Bell in the lead over Andy Gaiger. Men to n Morales, Bel-Ray exec utive Joe Dega no and Zack Benne tt. By lap two, the heat was b e g in n in g to · h a ve an effect on Degano, who had ju st return ed from tw o weeks in France. On lap th ree, Degano hesitated for a second and Bennett slammed the do or sh u t on h im and he faded backward . Meanwhile, th e lead rid e rs had separated th emselve s from the rest of the field , and Bell took th e win ov er Gaiger. Morales. Bennett and Jim Carley. " The second mot o saw Bell take the holesh ot ag ai n and lead th e race from sta rt to fini sh . Bennett go t a be tter start and finis hed a close second. Carl ey moved up to third, Gaiger took fo u rth and fellow Bakersf iel d local Morales :o und ed out the top five . Bell was awarded with the overall win , with Bennett getti ng secm d, Gaiger third, Carley fourth, and Moral es 'ifth.
