Bollebacked Terry Kyle piloted his KTM to an overall victory in the Ov er 40 A class. An un expected number of rid ers in some of the morning classes forced th e running of man y qu alifiers, wh ich pu sh ed the afternoo n progr am back by a few hours. Hats off to the promoter a nd all the work ers who whipped the track into fine condi tio n for the afternoo n races that go t u nder way at 3 p.m. Kyle, from DeBeque, Colorad o, captu red the first-moto holeshot in the Over 40 A class, but his lead did not come easily, as he battled wit h local David Picket on his Z's Motorspo rts/ Answer/Pro Circui t-backed Kawasak i. Self-sponsored Bruce jone mai ntained third on his modified KX, whi ch s has linkageless rear suspension. a cus tom airbox , and alumin um su bframe and fuel tank. jeff Hazelhurst hel d d own fou rth abo ar d a CCM , while CEET / Answer / N orth County Yama ha-s po n•sored Dale Winczewski rounded out the top five on his YZ400F. Within a lap, Winczewski outma neu vered Hazelhurst for fourth in the techn ical u ppt.>f section of the circuit that includ ed a trip letriple-doub le preced ed by a se ries of wh oops. Kyle held on to take the win in fro nt of Pickett, Jones, Winczewski and Hazelhu rst. As strong winds mov ed into the area, moto two got u nder way with Kyle a nd Pickett aga in lau nch ing fro m the gate side by side, wi th the sa me end result. Kyle pr oceed ed to pull away fro m th e pack, Pickett held down seco nd , a nd Jon es due led with Winczewski for third . A win dind uced tail-whip from the leader on 'one of the downhill d ou bl es pl eased the fans who wer e Strew n across the trac kside gr assy knoll. By lap two, Wincze wski succum be d to th e pr essu re from lones as he laid d own his thumpe r in a lefthanded swt.-eper sho rtly after passing the finishline area . With Pickett in sight, jones beg an to eat away at the five-second ga p that se pa rat ed the two. As the whi te flag appeared, Kyle enjoyed nearly a 30-s eco n d le a d, w hile the sprea d betwee n Pickett a nd jones remained at three seconds . Kyle comfor tably crossed the checkers in first to claim the overall as Pickett collected sec: nnd, Jones took thir d, Winczew ski earned. fourth and Ha zelhurst closed out the top five. When th e checkered flag came ou t, Hernandez took a wire- to-wire vic tory, followed by Flo re s, Baraldi, Rinau ro a n d Nic ho ls o n . Mot o two saw Baraldi gra b th e hol eshot, ahea d of Flor es, Rinauro, Nicholson and Hernand ez. Hernandez quick ly shot his way int o seco nd place and began to pressure Barald i. In fact , Hernandez outjumped Barald i ove r a big ta bletop to grab th e lead . However, that lead was short-lived, as a trip to the soil in the back section of th e tra ck gave the steady Baraldi th e lead once aga in. Flores maintained seco nd until a d etermined Hernandez made a smooth pa ss ove r the big tabletop to tak e ove r seco nd pla ce on lap thr ee. In fact, Hernand ez ap peared to be the fastes t rid er on the track. On the w hite-flag lap, Bara ld i had a hold on first and it appeared that Hern and ez had secured seco nd until th e big . tabletop finally sent him to the gro und. A hard lan d ing sent him to the soil again. an d Flor es took over seco nd - again . Hern andez rem ounted unh urt bu t ran out of time as the checkered flag waved. Schna bel, swe pt his fellow pros aside on his way to four wins at SST"s Short Track in Plym outh, Wisconsin . Despite stiff compe tition in all the classes, Schnabel eme rged on top in every class in wh ich he compe ted . in the 250cc Pro act ion, Schnabel wa s pursued by fellow Hon d a rid er Brian Zu rn an d Todd Kluever on a Suzuki. The SOOcc class saw jonathan Han son (on a 400cc Hon d a ) and Bob Ybema (on his Rota x) follow Schnabel across the line. TI,e 600cc final was a field full of Rot axes. Schnabel led from the green while bein g chased by Na tio na l nu m be r 98, Bre tt Be yer, Yberna, To d d Klu ever, a nd th e lad y fro m Ca lifornia , Michelle DiSalvo.
