Mayfield magical at Lodi 51 By Mike Law WDL CA, MAY23 Nationa l numbe r 38, Steve Mayfield, powered his Mayfield Brokerage-sponsored Wood -Rotax to two wire-to-wire sho rt-track victories in ProAm and Open A classes over a mul titude of dirt track talent at the Lod i Cycle BowL Eight rid ers lined up for the Pro-Am ma in eve nt on ly to see a green light an d then a red nag as Jesse Sanchez jumped the start. Meiring's top-end speed dropped Souza to five bike lengths back a t the end of the straigh tawa y s, bu t Souza's a weso me corner speed would close the ga p to within one bike length in the turns. With two laps to go, Souza slipped a little wide in the north tu rn and d ropped back for good as Meiring ma inta ined his smoo thness d finished first. Pacifica's Danny Casey rode the best race of is caree r as he easily wo n the combined 250cc , B and C classes in the short-track ma in event ver some of the bes t 250cc riders in No rth ern lifornia . Suzuki-mounted Casey made the big ump into the 250cc c1ass from the hotl y contestBOa: class, and a pparently he has found his iche . While Casey took the boleshot, national u m be r 56, Lon nie Pa u ley, had a less- the nem orab le start and beca me mired in traffic in he fifth position. Paul ey quickly made up for is sta rt as he hooked up on the straightaway nd performed a beau tifu l slingshot pass aro und riders in one sh ot, bri nging the large Lodi rowd to its feet .
