Mayfield magical at Lodi 51
By Mike Law
WDL CA, MAY23
Nationa l numbe r 38, Steve Mayfield, powered
his Mayfield Brokerage-sponsored Wood -Rotax
to two wire-to-wire sho rt-track victories in ProAm and Open A classes over a mul titude of dirt
track talent at the Lod i Cycle BowL
Eight rid ers lined up for the Pro-Am ma in
eve nt on ly to see a green light an d then a red
nag as Jesse Sanchez jumped the start. The second green light was a go, with May fie ld timing
the sta rte r perfectl y and scoring th e holeshot
a head o f San chez and Rob Da m ro n. With one
lap in the boo ks, Dam ron hooked up his ha u ling
H usaberg and b umped his way in to secon d .
Da mro n closed to within a bike length of Mayfield on severa l occasions. bu t the national rider
sim ply rode perfectly and made no mistakes to
take the chec kered na g by several bike len gths .
'" got a good start for a change:' Ma yfield
sai d . " l tried to stay smooth an d not make any
mistakes. Rob (Damron) was pretty close to me
through the race. and I rode real smoo th and got
the win."
The "Battle of the Tony s" eru pted in the Pro
Sportsman Short T rack main ev e nt between
Tony Meiring and Tony Souza. Meiring wo n the
drag race to the first turn, with Souza in hot pursuit. Meiring's top-end speed dropped Souza to
five bike lengths back a t the end of the straigh tawa y s, bu t Souza's a weso me corner speed
would close the ga p to within one bike length in
the turns. With two laps to go, Souza slipped a
little wide in the north tu rn and d ropped back
for good as Meiring ma inta ined his smoo thness
d finished first.
Pacifica's Danny Casey rode the best race of
is caree r as he easily wo n the combined 250cc
, B and C classes in the short-track ma in event
ver some of the bes t 250cc riders in No rth ern
lifornia . Suzuki-mounted Casey made the big
ump into the 250cc c1ass from the hotl y contestBOa: class, and a pparently he has found his
iche . While Casey took the boleshot, national
u m be r 56, Lon nie Pa u ley, had a less- the nem orab le start and beca me mired in traffic in
he fifth position. Paul ey quickly made up for
is sta rt as he hooked up on the straightaway
nd performed a beau tifu l slingshot pass aro und
riders in one sh ot, bri nging the large Lodi
rowd to its feet . Pauley d id everythi ng b u t
unch the bike int o the air as he chased the flyng Casey, wh o rode perfectly. Pau ley made sev01 moves to the outsi de of Casey, but the fearess Casey held his gr ound until Pa u ley was
a rced to ret ire wi th mechanical woes.
