APR. 26 Adam Bode took lop honors in the always-rompetitive 2SOcc Novice class at southern Arizona's Ocotillo Raceway. Bode's Eastside Cycle/ProAction Suspension Yamaha helped him to a 1-1 tally, his first perfect day in Novice racing. Moto one exploded off the gate with the holeshot going to Pll/Pro Racing's Lupe. Aguayo, followed by Kawasaki-mounted Anthony Maestas, Bode and the pack. There were plenty of early "adjustments" to the order, but the running order at the end of lap one was Aguayo, Maestas, Bode, and Kory Taylor ~board his brand·new YZF400F. The second-lap action saw Aguayo throw his race away with an unfortunate get-off, giving the lead to Maestas. Bode saw his opportunity to pass Maestas for the lead, took advantage of it and never looked back. By lap three, Taylor was pressuring Maestas for second, with Kawasaki of Tucson Cycle &: Ski/Pro Circuit-sponsoned Danny Shealey moving up to contend with Taylor. Maestas had nothing for the thumper pilot as Taylor scooted by for second, and the battle for third was on between the Kawasakis of Maestas and Shealey. By lap four, the lapped riders became a factor for the front-runners, but the order stayed the same to the finish with Bode in first, Taylor second, Maestas third and Shealey fourth, with Mark Shettlesworth moving up to fifth. When the action for moto two got under way, it was Maestas taking the holeshot over Bode, Taylor, Aguayo and the class. The end of lap one saw Maestas leading the way but feeling pressure from Bode as Taylor hustled to stay ahead of a determined Aguayo and Shealey. This train of riders remained in place until a lapper held up Aguayo, allOWing Shealey to pass fo.r fourth. As the white nag came out, Bode made his move on the inside of the final turn and passed Maestas in the air off the finish-line tabletop, railed the next tum and immediately pulled out a three-second lead. Bode's two wins gave him the overall win over Maestas (3-2). Shealey, running in fourth behind Taylor, pressured hard as the two battled for third. It was back and forth all the way, but Taylor took the third and final podium position with a 2-3. Gregg Hanson also had a great day, going II in the 250cc Beginner class, and became Arizona's newest 250cc Novice racer after receiving the "move up' speech at the trophy presentation. Hanson's first~moto win came with a holeshot and subsequent runaway win, but his second moto required that he pass fast starter Sam Hernandez, who took third overall, behind Brian Laslovica.
