Richtmeyer won the class, as well as the Classic SOOI75Occ division, at an AHRMA Dirt Track National held in Budds Creek, Maryland, (Below lem Dave Shelton (134) held off Dave Foos (444) in both motos to win the Over 38 Novice class at an OTHG motocross held at Lemon Grove Motocross Park in Piru, California, way into second. Foos knew he needed to beat Shelton to have a shot at th overall and couldn't afford to let him get away. Foos launched his thumper off the step-up jiJmp and past Evans into third. With Browean in the lead, Shelton and Foos began to pressure for the front position. Foos attempted to pass Shelton in the whoop section but couldn't make it stick. Shelton recovered and jumped over Browean's head and into the lead. Foos followed suit and jumped past Browean to claim second, while Foley ran a close fourth. The battle for the overall was on, and it was anybody's race. Foos passed Shelton for the Lead and ti,e apparent overall victory, but as the two received the white flag, Shelton reclaimed the lead. On the final lap, Shelton, Foos, Browean and Foley were separated by mere inches, but the order remained the same to the checkers. Shelton's perfect 1-1 netted him the overall win, Foos took second with 2-2 and Browean's 4-3 edged out Foley's 3-4 for the final podium position. VET tNT I. Sft.'Ve Men (}ion). Morehead reigns at Jerseyville Pro-Am DT By Dave H~nig Photos by Aat Trak Fotos JERSEYVILLE, It, MAY 3 The Missouri Mules Motorcycle Club brought professional motorcycle racing back to the jerseyville American Legion Park half mile for the first time since the late '70s. A week of heavy rain and the forecast of more rain on Sunday kept the rider turnout low, but a good crowd of spectators braved the cool morning. Some sun and windy conditions allowed the hard-working Mules to have the first heats on the Line by midaftemoon. Many of those spectators were surprised to see the big F~ Harley-Davidson hauler sitting in the pit, but due to the Springfield, Ohio, rainout, Steve Morehead was there looking to put some track time on his two new XR750 Harleys. In the 750cc Expert heat, Morehead battled his fellow Grand National regular Paul Morgan 1lI and his Coziahr Harley-Davidson R750 all the way. Morgan held on for the win. Morehead had a much better start in the main and held off Morgan as the two leaders pulled well away from Fat Boy Racing's Nick Daniels. Miller Racing's josh Butler pulled down fourth. Champaign Builder Supply-backed Steve Hall led the 600cc Pros into the first turn and never looked back. Brian Shirley and jeff Landrum were ahead of Experts James Hart and Paul Morgan ITl. Kenny Cool beth was once again working his way up from a poor start. Hall pulled well clear while Coolbeth clawed his way up to Shirley's rear wheel. On the last lap, Cool beth got in ide of the Pro-Sport in turn three and, as the duo exited turn four, Shirley slipped down. Landrum inherited third over Hart and Morgan. In the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance main, Brian Thomas held off Brian Kromroy for the win. Kromroy had won the Earl Widman Memorial Dash For Cash earlier. In the Amateur portion of the program, the 125cc class held just two riders, but they put on a fierce race, exchanging the lead several times before Rob Pearson took the win over Josh Toungetl. Pearson and Toungell came right back in the 250cc main, once again running 1-2. Dan Bond was well back in third. The Open main went to Bill Berger as·he narrowly defeated the fast-closing Nick Williams. Third went to Robert Adams in a three-rider battle with David Gill and Mike Grieff. Results 750 EX: I. MAY 3 The moto gods cooperated and held off the rain, allowing the Over The Hill Gang (OTHG) to commence racing at Lemon Grove Motocross Park. Dave Shelton put his YZ ahead of the extremely competitive Over 38 ovice class to take the win. Shelton, Michael Foos and Mark Browean traded paint for the entire time in both motos, but it was Shelton who narrowly edged out the competition in both motos for the overall victory. Craig Rutledge prepared an excellent course, and Mother Nature added the precise amount of water for good moto action. Moto one saw KX-mounted Mark Martin in the lead, with Carl Foley, Foos and Shelton in tow. On lap two, Foley claimed the lead through the whoop section, with Shelton and Browean taking second and third. Foos began his charge to the front after a subpar start, working his way into fourth. Up front, it was Shelton's turn to lead, so he made an aggressive move to the inside of Foley and the two rubbed graphics going side by side up the step-up jump. Meanwhile, Foos put his four-stroke KLX into second, relegating Browean to third. On the final lap, the four riders in the lead pack were very tight as they encountered lapped traffic and banged gears only inches apart as they headed toward the uphill straightaway. At the checkers, it was Shelton, followed by Foos and Foley. Browean attempted a desperation pass on Foley and the two bumped at the checkers with Foley hanging on to third. Moto two was another bar-banging bash as the same four riders eventually jousted for the coveted plastic motorcycle. Richtmeyer rules at Budds Creek AHRMA DT By Rusty Lowry BOODS CREEK, MD, MAY 3 ew York's George "Rocket" Richtrneyer picked up where he left off last year by defending his AHRMA Dirt Track Championships with a pair of wins and a second at the rain-delayed Budds Creek AHRMA ationa! Dirt Track. A scant crowd of 32 vintage riders ignored the weatherman's advice and gathered at Budds Creek in Maryland for the fourth AHRMA Dirt Track National of 1998, only to be sent away early Saturday night as thunderst rms drenched the 3/8-mile clay oval. Sunday, however, dawned clear and sunny, and the sponsoring Baltimore County Trail Riders worked the track back into good shape to get the racing under way before noon. Virginian Bill Worthington captured his first feature win since 1976 as he held off Beno Rodi for the Dinosaur-class victory. Worthington overcame a heat·race fall when, entering tum three. his Triumph's throttle stuck and he pitched ti,e brakeless bike away. Falling seemed to be the avenue to success for another brakeless rider, witll Carl Forkey bringing out a red flag early in the Oassie 250cc feature when he lost the front end of his rigidframed Harley-Davidson Sprint - and collected class champion John Bova in the ensuing wreckage. Both riders made the restart, with Forkey finally capturing a long-sought-after Vintage National win on his Italian-built Harley. Richtrneyer started his winning ways in the remaining brakeless class, lurking behind Harley KR-moullted Rusty Lowry for seven laps -of the Classic 500/75Occ event before stuffing it past Lowry as they entered tum one on the final lap. The local rider's Harley thundered down the back straight, but Richtmeyer was too quick through the final corner and led at the line to notch the win. Richtrneyer's quickness through th!, banked oval's tight corners wasn't quite enough to make up for an obvious horsepower disadvantage in the Sportsman 250cc class, and he could only post a second to Darryl jakubowski's potent Yamaha.. Richtmeyer really shined in the extremely fast and competitive Sportsman 750cc class as he led an eight-bike field from the first lap to the checkers, chased by series rival Arnie Mahnke on a orton and Daniel Bryant on a Yamaha. The ew York rider had his Ed Arndt-prepared Yamaha dialed in and was running a high line into the comers before squaring them off at the end and slicing down ahead of the pursuing field. _ Rodi avenged his Dinosau.r-class defeat with a win in the Over 50 Senior class on a very trick Weslake 750cc twin, with the remaining AHRMA-class win going to jack Southall in the Sportsman 60cc division. Bill Allen (Yam), Lindsey dominates Daniel Boone Motocross By Susan S. Willian LONDON, KY, APR.:&26 Riders from 12 states and Canada competed at the Shiloh Roadhouse/AMA Amateur ationa! Area Qualifier at Daniel Boone MX, and Georgia's Aaron Lindsey rode to four class wins during the two-day event on a well-prepped course despite six inches of rain that had fallen within a week. BSY Yamaha / AXO-backed Lindsey won both motos in the 125cc B dass. William Simmons and Gary's Honda/FMF/Keith Bowensponsored j.T. Smith tested each other throughout moto one. Simmons held on to second off the gate, with Smith in fourth. Smith worked his way around Dusty Walker to close the distance on Simmons by the end of lap two. By the fourth lap, Smith had piloted his machine by Simmons and he landed second at the checkers, with Simmons next in line. The second moto saw Anthony Nash main: tain second as Simmons remained in third the entire moto. Smith, who had a seventh-place start, worked his way to fifth at the end. The 12Scc Youth (l2-1S) division saw Scoll Cravens fire off the gate in moto one, followed by Dusty Walker, F&S Suzuki/Prolong/Suspension Plus-supported j.R. Carter and Lindsey_ Lindsey moved by Carter into third, but as Walker began to fade back, Lindsey. and Carter moved into second and third. Lindsey attempted to get by Cravens as the front two pulled out some distance over Carter. By lap three, Lindsey was pushing Cravens around the course. Lindsey made a few mistakes, but eventually made a successful pass over the tunnel jump and stretched out his lead over Cravens. As Lindsey and Cravens finished the moto in first and sec-
