FEB. 8 The 1998 vi n tage mo tocross season got und er way at round one of the American Historic Racing Moto rcycle Associa tion (AHRMA) Speed & Sport Na tional MX Series at Speedworld Motorpl ex , and local boy Tim Leeh e look the win in t he h ighly co m petit iv e Over 40 Intermedia te class. Slated to be part of Cruise America's seco nd annual Arizona Bike Week, the MX ended up being the only event tha t ran on Sunday, as rain fell continuous ly t hrougho ut the day , Th e twisty, sand-based track was just about perfect during p ractice. but got messy as the d ay p rogressed. Finally, after the first round of 12 mot os finis hed, prom oter Da ve Boyds tun of AMS Racing decid ed to call it a day, and double champi onship points were"awarded to the 242 entrants based on firs t-moto finis hes . In the eve r-compe titive Ov er 40 lntennediate class, u >ehe took the win over lronman entrant Gary Egloff and his Maico 400. Terry Mendel and Tim Cu rtis ro u nd ed ou t th e top four. Leehe had to sett le for second in the 500cc ln tennedi- at es, as fellow Husky pilot Mark Simpson won . Egloff was third . Ernie Hendricks, back racin g a fter a long layoff, wa s impressive on his way to the Ov er 30 and SOOcc Expert-c lass victories aboard a Yamaha . New Expe rt rid er Don Ad ams was second to Hendricks in th e Ove r 30 cla ss, the n rod e his Elsin ore to th e 250cc Exper t-class victory . Eugene Craw ford sco red o ne for the California boys by sliding his AjS Stormer through the ever-deepe ning mud to win Class ic 500 No vice; Montes.l-m oun ted Ike Winchell was seco nd . Th e C lassic 125cc No vice class had Te xa n Phil Grund y g uide his Puch to th e class win over Ca lifo rnia 's Mike Folena , aboard a Rick- man Zundapp . Other C lassic 125cc wi n n e rs in cl u d e d Expert Ken Gerard and CZ-mo unted Inter med iate Lawrence Lucia. Pre mier Lightweight Intermed iate had a good tu rnout of eig h t early1960s machin es . Indiana's Daniel Beher rode a Ducati to the overall win, followed by BSA C15 rider Rand y Hiatt a nd a pair of Co tton Cobras rid den by Dave Duane a nd Co lorado's Dan VitalcUi. O ther interesting machinery included a Matchless G2 ridden by fifth-p laced Rob Stickler . and jerry Sibley' s ESQ. Sexagenarians now receive specific recog nition in AH RMA mot ocross, a nd there were six en tra nts in the Over 60 Intermediate division.
