than 420 rid ers from nine stat es compet ed in the
opening round 01 the Prosports Sunshine State
Cha mpions hip Series, held at Motocross of Marion County.
In the first Open Money mote, Ronnie Renner led th e 1 5~ri d er field into tum one , wit h
Ricky Hampshir e, Smith , Todd Ga rd ne r and
Cliff Cook follo wi ng . Hampsh ir e sli ppe d by
Renner in the "5" tu rn afte r the sta rt to move
into the lead . Hamp shire, wh o just returned to
racin g after a long layoff, held the poin t position
. for two lap s before Renn er and Smith mot ored
by. Renn er and Smith then opened up a small
lead over Hampshire and Cook. 'With two laps
to 'go, Smith was pressuring Renner for the lead
as Cook kn o cked Hampshire back to fourth.
Renn er held off the attacks of Smith to claim the
mot o w in, wh ile Coo k, Hampshire and Jason
Peres rounded out the top five places.
Hampshire rocketed out of the ga te to start
mot o two, with Ga rdne r, Smi th , Renner and
Jason Fink in hot pursu it, an d Smit h qu ickly
ducked und ern eath Gar d ner and Ham pshire to
take the lead . With a clear track in fronl of him ,
Smith pu lled aw ay to score the moto and overall
win, but the fight for the runner-up spo t was on.

then bob bled an d Renner and Fink slipped by
with Hampshire. By the time Renner got into
second , Smith was long gone. Fink , Hampshire
