Grove Hare Scrambles

Mud and mayhem were the order of the day at
ro und five of the 1998 AMA Texas Champio ns hip Hare Scramble Series, held in High
Grove, Texas, and Kawasaki-mo unted Steven
Rathmann kept it on two wheels as he roosted to
a convincing victory in the AA class.
The 1997 Texas Enduro cha m pion, Josh
Whibker, grabbed the early lead. but Rathma nn
an d Kirk Foster eventually took ove r and pulled
away during the shortened afternoon race. Just
behind the AA class, Lynn Bailey took the overall vic tory on his Honda of Houston Racingsponsored machine, taking his seco nd overall
win of the year. The shocker of th e day came
fro m Mich ael Spohn, w ho q uickly fou nd his
wa y in to second overall, first 250cc Open A
ri d er, a fte r s ta rting o ne min u te beh ind t he
Exper t A class . Oth er A~ lass exciteme n t came
from the Fou r-Stroke class as Pa ul Short wa s
shado wed by Stewart Frank for the who le race.

In th e chase for the Overall B win, Terry
Deck powered his way to a mons ter victory over
Greg Nicholson and Michael Ursin. as they were
.the 'only three Bcclass rid ers to com plete three
laps .

The Ove rall C trophy was kept at home as
James Rathmann eas ily wo n by three min u tes
ahea d of Over 50 ri d er Jerry Boren. Boren
seemed to crus h the spirit of every rider he left
in his wake, including numerous Vet and Junio r
competitors, bu t he could not catch Rathmann.
Che rie Lara led the way and sho wed the
competition in the Women's class jus t ho w to
gel through the mud by edging ou t Myra Blair.
Houston Supercross star Derek Osborn pointed
his KTM in the right d irecti on and pulled the
trigger to win the 50cc class.
