Leivan collects Coffee Creek HS
By Frank Leivan
CANTON, MO, MAY 25
For the fourth time this season, Steve Leivan
emerged the winner of a Missouri State Hare
Scrambles Championship round when he won
round five of the 15-rice series, hosted by the
Coffee Creek Dirt Riders in Canton, Missouri.
The club laid out a challenging 8-mile course
that included a wide variety of terrain. The
MemoriaJ Day weekend event drew 124 riders,
but only the top 10 overall finishers would complete six laps.
Leivan claimed his first holeshot of the season, edging out Ken Yount and ATK-mounted
Chris Caplinger. At the conclusion of lap one,
the running order was Leivan, Caplinger, Leigh
Letellier, Yount and Mike Windrnann. Near the
end of lap two, Caplinger made his bid for the
lead, moving past Lei van on 0l1e of the downhills. The two riders compJeted the second lap
separated by one second, with Yount taking
over third another 20 seconds back.
After threading through lappers for a lap,
Leivan pushed his Yamaha past Caplinger and
into the lead on one of the fastest sections of the
course. When the leading duo arrived at the
toughest uphill on the course, Leivan paused
while looking for a clear shot. Caplinger seized
the moment and made his attempt at the climb
with Leivan in tow. Both riders were unsuccessful and were forced to dismount and push to the
top, and Caplinger took an approximate 3Q.second lead at this poinl.
With only a lap and a half left in the race,
Leivan knew that he had his work cut out for .
himself. "Once I cleared the hill, J pushed really
hard trying to catch back up, and in a couple of
miles Chris was hung up on another hill,"
Leivan said. HJ made i! to the top pretty quickly,
and after that I concentrated on going as fast as
possible and slaying out of trouble."
Leivan would complete an error-free final
lap and stretch his lead to just slightly over two
and a half minutes on his Surdyke Motorsports/Dunlop/NGK-backed WR250. Caplinger
would encounter more problems on the final circuit, and be overtaken by Yount for the runnerup position. Caplinger took third, followed by
Windmann and Letellier.
The Open B class proved to be the race of
• the day, with four riders swapping places on
every lap. The only lap that Danny Crawford
led was the one tha t rna Itered, as he took his
first-ever series class win. Tom Prenger finished
44 seconds back in second, and Chris Sloan and
l.R. Hansen finished third and fourth, respectively.
