Don Upton was the man on the move in the 250cc Pro class, after a decisive victory during the GFI/FMF Memorial Day Extravaganza held at Penis Raceway. Upton poured it on during the start of the first 250cc Pro race, and squeezed his FMF YZ into the holeshot through the hairpin first turn. Upton shook off .n early challenge from the oleen-baded RM of Steve Drew, and SUcces&fully pulled away from the small pad of Pros on an all-new IT Scrambles-type racecourse. Late in the single 20-minute race, Japanese rider "Yoshi" Atsuta made an impressive pass for secondon Drew. ur am here in America for one year to race, and to train and learn from the American racers," Atsuta said. "I hope to race twice a week and ride every day." In the end, it was all Upton, while Atsuta, Drew and Brian Deegan rounded out the top four. Speaking of Deegan, the Team Moto XXX/O'Neal rider flew in from the AMA Nationa"J in Mou.nt Morris, Pennsylvania, only the day before, and won the 125cc Pro class. Deegan topped the YZ-mounted duo of Upton and Josh Tarantino. Bryan MeGavran and Oscar Valdez dulced it out in the 125cc Intermediate division, with the war being won by MeGavran. MeGavran rode aggressively yet smart en route to a I-I finish over Valdez, Dusty Walters, Josh Warner and Kenny Miller. The 125ee Novice class saw Greg Halverson nail down the victory, despite falling down in the second moto. Halverson caught and passed Mall Armstrong in the first moto to talce the victory, while Jason Howard, Jeff Eide and Craig Williams rounded out the top five. Howard led early in the second moto, but his arm popped out of joint, causing him to come to an abrupt hall. Armstrong and Halverson took turns running up front, but both took soil samples due to an overwatered race track. In the end, Alex Ewing inherited the lead and went on to win the moto. When the dust settled and the points were tallied, Halverson (1-3) was declared the winner over Armstrong (2-4), Williams (5-2), Ewing (9-1) and Eide (-Hi). Team FMF / Honda R&D-backed Mike Young was a double-moto winner in the Supermini division over the track's local mini ace, Sean Hamblin, and Chris Rogers. R....1ts 50 STK (7-8): t. Jim Stines sizzles at Full Blown Promotions SX By Tony Alessi LANCASTER, CA, MAY 24 Garrell Stines learned about the importance of consistent riding, as he turned a pair of thirdplace finishes into the overail win in the 12Sec Beginner class during the Full Blown ~romo tions Supercross Series held inside the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds in Lancaster. Donnie Durrer pulled the holeshot at the start of the first 125cc Beginner moto, and jumped farther, braked later and hit the roclcers faster than any other Beginner, and went on to a convincing moto win over Chris Barret a.nd Stines. Gerrard Patin and Oyde Adams ran up front early in the race, but collided into one another and finished outside the top 10. Durrer did not perform a repeat holeshot in the second moto. Instead, he crashed himseU bad to 14th at the finish, while Clyde Adams and Patin finished first and second, respectively. In the end, Stines finished third, and was declared the night's overail winner with a 3-3 over Drew Rutledge (4-5) and Chris Cas.ause (&4). Cody Sandefer used good starts and great finishes to top the 60cc Beginner class. Sandefer put his Nationwide Cycles-baded KX60 in the winner's circle in both motos, where he topped Ryan lasko, James Ramus, Justin Renwid and Shana Rhinehart. Lex Malan used strong, aggressive riding to earn the night's 12Sec Pro-class victory. Malan topped Don Upton, Brian Sweaney, Jerry ALeman and Greg SchnelL Results P/W BEC: 1.loshWl ParlcinlJCMl; 2. By Tony Alessi MORENO VALLEY, CA, JUNE I Team Suzuki's mini sensation Shane Bess hit the bull's"'ye by winning the 80cc 12- to 13-year-old Stoclc class durin& the NMA Ponca City qualifier held at Starwest Motocross Park in California. Bess busted out of the gate with the holeshot in the first 80cc 12- to 13-year-old Stoclc moto, which was combined with the 14- to 16-year-old stock age division. Team Honda R&D rider Chris Gosselaar was riding the edge in second, and fell while trying to put a wheel inside of Bess. Team NCY Yamaha's Sean Hamblin moved to second and gave it his best, but, unfortunately for Hamblin, his best wasn't enough, as the 12-year-old Bess simply stole the show and left Hamblin in the dust. Bess went on to an undisputed victory, while Hamblin, Mike Young, Levi Reid and Tearn Green rider Dalton Beavers rounded out the top five. The second moto saw the Hondas of eoss.,. laar and Young get out front and disappear. The two Honda mini pilots waged an all-out war for several laps, with Gosselaar corning out on top. First-moto 'vinner Bess rebounded from a poor start to secure third, which was good enough for the overail win. Young's 3-2 gave him second, and GosseJaar's 6-1 earned him third overail. Young came bad with a vengeance in the 80cc Modified 12- to 16-year-old division over Gosselaar, Bess, R.J. Thompson and Hamblin. South African Mike Constantinou was king of the Intermediate ranks, posting an awesome six-moto sweep of the 125cc Stoclc and Modified Intermediate classes and the 250cc Modified Intermediate division. Constantinou rode closer to the Pros than the Intermediates en route to his slam dunk of the divisions. Bruce Rutherford was the undisputed prince of Pee Wees, winning the 4- to 6-yearold Stock and Modified divisions. Rutherford pushed his AC Racing-tuned Cobra to a fourmoto sweep of the classes, where he topped Brandon Million and Mike Covelli in the Modified class and Rob Jinan and Donnie Kearney in the Stoclc class. 01 P/W MOD (7-8): 1.
