Hodges handles Actiontown MX By Jay and Sharon Hauser DlLWYN, VA, MAR, 16 Team Green rider Mitchell Hodges came to the AMA Loretta Lynn's Area Qualifier at Actiontown MX Park and romped away with a perfect four-moto sweep of the 125 and 250cc A Pro-Am classes. A huge group of nearly 800 riders turned out for the two-day event, the first round of the AMA Answer!MSR Eastern U.S. Pro-Am MX Spring Series. . Hodges had his work cut out for him as he gated poorly at the start of the first l2Sec ProAm moto, finding his Fox!Wiseco-backed Kawasaki all the way back in seventh place. The holeshot belonged to a hard-eharging Yamahamounted Daniel Dailey. Dailey showed the way for the first three laps with a hot pack breathing down his neck. Terry Kennedy was looking to make a move for the lead on lap one but pitched it in the front whoop section, dropping three places, giving another A-class newcomer, Stoner Ross a shot at Dailey. All the while the battles up front were going on Hodges was clawing his way to the front. He reached Dailey on the fourth lap and muscled his way past. Once out front, it was all she wrote and Hodges was gone, leaving the battle for second behind him. D;tiley showed no signs of fatigue and held onto to a strong second place ride, while Maryland rider Jason Conlon 'worked his Suzuki past Ross to take thlrd by moto·send. Hodges was quick to get off the gate in the second moto, avoiding conflict and getting away from the field in a hurry. Hodges was clearly the fastest man at the track as he took a comfortable lead, but the battle for second wa anything but comfortable. Dailey again found himself at the head of the five-way battle for the runner-up spo~ holding off Ross, Shane Templeton,.Conlon and then ewton. Conlon worked on Ross and overtook tltird, but both riders would lose out by the checkered flag as ewton was on fire and started blazing past everybody. Once Newton. went to work on DaiJey, his job got tougher, but he closed the gap and made his pass on the white-flag lap and held on for a hard-fought second-place finish, giving. him third on the podium. Dailey's fine riding and consistent scores netted him the runner-up position to the unstoppable Hodges. Results so (4-6~ I. Devon Pilkington (KTM); 2. TIlYlor Futrell; 3 Tyler Cintt (Act); 4 O.J. Nlcholu Bums (Han, SANFORD, NC, MAR. 9 Suzuki of Winston Salem ace Chad "Fig" Newton made the best of the newly reworked race course to come away with a strong overall win in the competitive 250cc A ranks, as well as a second place showing in l2Sec A class to Marcus Hedrick at Devils Ridge MX Park in Sanford, North Carolina. Newton took control of 2SOcc A moto one from the drop of the gate, leaving Todd Bouren in his wake to fight off Scott Shipley and James Coy. Once out front, Newto",!,ut a five-second cushion between himself and the battlmg field and proceeded to waltz off to the moto win. Meanwhile, the battle for the runner-"p spot wedged on as Shipley turned up the heat and put the pressure on Bouren for the spot, overtaking him on lap three with an inside line. When the flag fell for moto one, it was Newton way out front over Shjpley and Bouren. Local star Mark Wagner put in a strong charge from the rear to work up and take fourth from Roger Carrico before moto's end. Newton repeated his holeshot effort in 2SOcc A moto two, only this time Shipley was right on his rear fender and looking to maintain Newton's pace. On the second lap, Shipley'S hopes for a moto win were dashed with a quick trip to the dirt. Bouren was quick to make use of Shipley's fall and moved into second as did Virginia 250cc A number-one plate holder Chris Anstead as he took over third. Bouren blew his chance to keep second place when he overshot a berm, letting both Anstead and a fired-up Shipley back by. Shipley eventually got by Anstead to take over second Newton was almost back to the truck when Shipley took the flag for second and Anstead held onto a good ride to take third. Wagner did what he needed to do and pushed Bouren back to fifth by moto's end, scoring a third place fin; ish overall with his pair of fours. Results 50 (4-6): I Taylor Funll CLEM); 2.
