JAN. 12 Kraig Riese carne fro~ behind -after a number of poor starts to take overall wins in the Pro, 250cc and Four~Stroke classes on the Aurora Racing Inc. third-mile oval on Big Lake at the Klondike Inn. Racers were relieved to find ideal light conditions and mild temperatures in the mid-20s after more than a week of temperatures dropping to 30 below or lower. Track conditions were excellent due to the prerace preparation using a street sweeper to clear off the cushion. In the flrSt Pro molO, Harvey Mushrnan got the holeshot and led the field into tum one with the pack bunching up behind him. Riese rode the outside searching for traction and Dan Nicoll looked to the smooth inside for an opening. Entering tum one on the second lap, Nicoll moved to the outside, blocking Riese, and passed Mushman. Riese saw the move and followed Nicoll past Mushman exiting tum two. Nicoll and Riese rode handlebar to handlebar for three laps, neither givmg an inch. Mushman followed, looking for an opportunity. On the fifth lap, Riese clived into tum one deep and went wide 10 the cushion. He!looked up a.nd got out of shape as the Yamaha he was ricling wheelied. Nicoll pulled ahead and Mushman moved in on Riese. But Riese pulled it in and set his sights onNicolL By driving hard into every tum to get the traction on the outside, Riese passed Nicoll entering tum one on the white-flag lap and went on to win. In the third 250cc moto, a wild melee happened. Brock Powell led the pack into the first tum, but as he entered the tum he was bracketed by Mushman and Riese. Lance Leaneave was blocked by three riders and had to wait his tum. The four leaders traded positions for four laps until Riese hit a big bump entering tum one and got into a tank slapper while Leaneave stuffed Mushman on the inside and nearly high-sided as he hit Mushman. Brock Powell began to fade, leaving the three Yamaha riders to battle it oul Reise recovered and blazed the outside as Leaneave and Mushman tangled. On the fifth lap, Leaneave passed Mushman and set out for Riese. Riese, ricling the outside, appeared to lose ground to the insideriding Leaneave. But the race was one lap too short for Leaneave as Riese nipped him by a wheel at the flag. Results SUPERBIKE '98 Tlv.. "'"" '" ptJI1I dIama!
