In 1997, all VZ models will gain from
increased power. The VZ250 benefits
from the most improvements, including
new crankcases, cylinder body, exhaust
pipe, combustion chamber shape and
volume, and a new reed valve. In 1997,
weekend racers can look like factory pros
as Yamaha will modify its new blpe and
white color scheme to replicate its
factory works-bikes.
EVENTS
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX, JAN. 19
Pratt Kramer took the 80cc overall win during a
rainy day of racing presented by the Oso Creek
MXOub.
By the beginning of the first set of matos, the
track was very tacky as the showers settled in.
The Beginner class started off the day to tackle
the recently lengthened and improved track,
which includes a new natural· terrain section.
Mike Riley on his KX250 steadily dominated the
class made up of only three riders and, in mota
two, only Glen Rose on an XR400 came out to.
play with Riley.
Kramer and Brandon Johnson traded the 80cc
lead back 'and forth. In the first mota, Johnson
had a bad start and Kramer took the lead, followed by Tim Stamper and Josh Stamper. By lap
two, Johnson had gained the second position.
Then Mother Nature took her toll on the
track, making the conditions slick. Mota two
was led by Johnson until the second lap, when
all three riders took a fall in the same tum that
cost him first place.
Four 2SOcc bikes and one 500 were lined up
to make the combined Over 25 and Open race.
This was another hot competition where Donny
Jackson and Vince Kacir swapped the firsl- and
second-place positions as David Downs pushed
up behind them and Tony Stamper followed.
Only three bikes screamed through moto
two as the dirt grew increasingly wel Stamper
followed closely in third place as Kacir kept
Johnson working hard for second.
One 5Oce-class mota was enough for Brendan Oark and Shea Murray. The two little racers looked to be having a fun but had a rough
time on the chunky terrain.

FORT WORn!, TX, JAN. 5
Jonathan Kerr raced to main.-event wins in the
65cc and 85cc (7-11) classes at the Mike Kiddpromoted AMA Amateur Arenacross held at
Will ~ogers Coliseum.
LCS-backed mirubike rider's main competition came from RPM·sponsored Thomas
Hahn, who grabbed the holeshot in the 65cc (711) main. Kerr stayed right behind the leader to
take the lead at the top of lap three over the finish-line jump. Shorty's Racing's Bryan zachary
III gated fourth off the start and chased down
Matt Moseley before moving up into third to
pressure Hahn, who held on to finish second
behind Kerr.
Hahn once again had the upper hand in the
85cc (7-11) main, taking the holeshot in front of
Kerr and Matt Fhuere. Hahn suffered a crash in
lap two and remounted several positions down
to finish seventh. Fhuere finished second behind
Kerr.
Arlington Suzuki's Dusty Fountain grabbed
the hoJeshot ahead of Johnny Marley in the 85cc
(14-15) ~ but Marley and Pasadena Kawasaki~red Bradley Barham both passed f0untain in the first lap. Both Madey and Barham
went down after the catapult, which opened the
door to Honda of Tulsa's Sam Fhuere. Marley
was quicker to remount, but not before Fountain
had taken over third. Fountain chased Fhuere for
two laps before passing over the catapult for second. Marley used the next lap to pass Fhuere in
the whoops into third, but with only one lap
remaining, Marley ran out of time to catch fountain or Humphrey, the winner.
Max's-baeked Taylor Watts gave it his all in
the 85cc (12-13) class to beat Team Green's
Chase Reed to the first turn. Reed, however,
wicked it up a notch or two and passed Watts
out of the first turn and was gone from that
point on. Watts took second.
The 50cc (7-8) event had six states represented in the top six finishes. Fritz Trucking-backed
Craig Fritz of Nebraska took the win, followed
by O'Neal's Ryan Wilson of New Mexico, D&D
Fence's Jordan GemstJ of New York. Brian Brunson of Arkansas and Cycle Town South's
Richard White of Texas.
