bon copy of the first with Horrocks pulling an early lead. Dexter again . pushed a last-lap pass and this tiJne held on for the moto win and the Super Mini first-place trophy. The racing wasn't over for the Super Mini riders, since most of these guys were also in the Senior Mini 8Occ. Firstmoto action was a swapfest with the top four riders trading the lead. Horrocks led the race with a clean holeshot, only to endo on a double. Portsmouth, Virginia's Stephen Barnes ·grabbed the lead and ran away with it, only to find his endo on another double a lap later. Dexter and Archie Perry of Pittsgrove, New Jersey, freight-trained on by in first and second. A hard-charging Horrocks caught up to Dexter and secured second with Perry taking first. The second moto was a Dexter-vs.Horrocks battle with Dexter pushing an end-of-moto pass for the mota win and his second overall win of the day. An interesting note: Both Horrocks and Barnes got up from ugly endos and jumped back on their bikes as if nothing had happened. The Pro-class iron men were Chris Lykens of Lamar, Pennsylvania; Peter Hogan of South Meridian, Connecticut and Brad Crouch of Newport News, Virginia. In the first 2S0cc A moto, Hogan grabbed the holeshot and commanded the first few laps only to catch his front wheel in a rut, putting him down pretty hard. Lykens moved on by to take the lead and the moto. In a combined moto, Crouch and 125cc A rider Danny Dailey of Suffolk, Virginia, fought it out for the overall lead. Crouch slid into Dailey in a berm with both riders going down. As if they were choreographed, both riders remounted and got back into the race, drag racing ~ide by side to the next tum. Both riders cranked out a great moto, even though they were in separate classes. The top four rid ers in the 12Scc C class freigh t-trained around the track, swapping the lead back and forth in both motos. In the first mota, Mike Wandel of Fredericksburg, Virginia, ho1eshot and led the pack. A bobble let Josh Fulton of Virginia Beach, Virginia, cruise on by into first for the mota win. The second moto saw the train being led by a consistent Fulton. The second, third and fourth positions were a dogfight as riders s~apped lines, berrning inside and out, and drag racing from tum to tum. Virginia Beach's Todd Bennett was doing everything he could to make a pass, often grabbing inside lines to make momentary passes only to get shut down in the next tum. He made at least a dozen swaps before securing third position from Bowie, Maryland's Ryan Newkirk and finishing. out the day third overall. Fulton went On to wrap up the overall win with a solid 1-1 day. Whether they were competing for Pro cash or Amateur series points, all of these riders showed excellent sportsmanship and die-hard attitudes. The SOcc guys ranged in age from 4 to 8 years old and, despite their small size, their riding showed that these kids were ready for the big time. The youth riders were tougher than ever and the big boys showed how experience pays off. In 1997, Elizabeth City has both District 13 and 29 races lined up as well as portio~ of the 1997 U.S. Eastern ProAm Spring and Fall Series. Next year's Mid-Atlantic Winter Series is in the planning stages with more tracks and bigger contingincies.
