The California Racing Club crew toned down the sandy Los Angeles County Raceway Saddle Glen course to suit the vintage and Hey-Day (pre-'82) bikes to perfection. Maico-mounted Dan Berg led the charge through the sweeping right-hand first turn as the gate dropped in moto one. Tim ash and Staten were battling over second on a couple of nice 250cc Hondas, with Chris Radzinski, Rick O'Donnell and Charlie Beck giving chase. Staten was the first to make a move, diving underneath ash to take over second place with a lap completed. Berg was cutting some fast laps on his pristine big-bore and had pulled six seconds on Staten, who had hi hands full holding off a determined Nash. O'Donnell was getting used to things and started reeling in Radzinski on his four-stroke Honda. When the checkers fell, it was Berg with the win. Staten pulled clear of ash in the last couple of laps for second. O'Donnell was all over Radzinski on the final lap in a great battle for fourth with Radzinski holding him off by half a bike length at the line. Berg duplicated his first-mota holeshot in round two. Staten was on a 490cc Maico of his own this time, and he wasn't about to give Berg the horsepower advantage again. Radzinski held third over Nash and O'Donnell. It took Staten a couple of laps to get used to his German-made mount, but once he did, he started to reel in Berg. Halfway through the race, Staten was within striking distance and started to look for a way !Hound when Berg waved him past, the victim of a front flat. Staten easily motored away for the win. Even with a flat, the super-smooth Berg was able to finish second. ash got around Radzinski for tNrd-place payback. O'Donnell used 5-4 finishes to edge out Radzinski's 4-5 score for fourth overall. "Berg is a hard charger," Staten said, "but I figured he'd last six laps. I know he doesn't train hard. I've been racing a lot in the desert lately and doing some motocross schools, so I thought I could wear him down in the end." Seventies hotshoe David Taylor picked up the Vintage 125cc Expert firstmoto win, but not without battling with Scott Davis and multi-time quad champion Gary Denton for the entire mota. When the checkers waved, Taylor finished inches ahead of Davis with Denton equally close in third. Taylor grabbed the second-mota holeshot and was passed by Denton on the opening lap. Taylor returned the favor two laps later and again held on by the slimmest margin over Denton and Davis for first-place money. Taylor, Denton and Davis returned to fight it out in the Hey-Day 125cc Pro class, but it was Eric Casa who prevailed with 1-2 finishes. Denton couldn't find a way around Taylor in mota one and had to settJe for third. Denton came back to hold off Casas for the secondmota win and second-place payback. Steve Gordon holeshot both Hey-Day 25O/5OOcc Intermediate motos aboard a sano 490cc Maico, but couldn't hold off hard-charging YZ250 pilot Robert Little, who swept both m9tos over Eric Cook and Marc Cartwright. Penton-mounted Nick Barrick came out on top off a three-way points tie for the 250/500cc Vintage ovice class. Fi rst-moto winner Ed Tashjian did not finish round two, giving Barrick the overall with a 4-1 score over the 3-2 of Robert Van Scoyoc and 2-3 rides of James Hampton. Tashjian redeemed himself by going I-lover fellow CZ rider Mike Damon for the Vintage Over 30 ovice-c1ass overall honors. Steve Ottinger, Gary CochelJ and arm Blackman rounded out the top five. Schellenberger heats up Walnut Creek Motocross By Malcolm Wood WELCH, OK, DEC. 15 Chris Shellenberger rode hard on a chilly afternoon to take the overall Outlaw win in the third round in the Walnu.t Creek Motocross Pack annual winter series. Shellenberger recovered from a subpar moto-one seventh-place finish to put together a second-place mote two for the overall win in the Outlaw class. Temperatures in the mid-30s greetea racers. On a day when events at other venues in Oklahoma were canceled, the recently redesigned track had near-perfect soil composition to reward those true diehard motocrossers. While Schellenberger did pilot his CR to !be overall, it waso't without a little help from local speedsters. James Ford crashed in moto one of the intermediate class and couldn't return to back up his moto-one second-place finish. Motoone winner Ryan Powell also could.n't rerum his RM to moto two for a repeat. Schellenberger's perseverance nelled him the overall, with Ray Ruppert finishing second overall. K.C. Lux went 2-1 to score the win in the 125cc Beginner dass at the Clovis SpOrlcyde Complex. Jeff Martinez, Lux and Justin Warren got the day off to an exciting start exiting the first tum three abreast. Entering the first whoop section, Martinez opened up a bike-length lead over Lux, who had Warren by a wheel. • Warren challenged Lux for second as the two 'Honda riders entered'a pair f kicker jumps. Lux railed the outside in the fast right-hande, following the kickers and was able to hold off Warren. Justin Gonzales and Aaron Mueller fol· lowed dosely, dicing for fourth. Warren made his move on Lux as the pair approached a triple. then set his sights on Martinez. As Martinez entered an off-camber righthand tum before the kicker, he was rear-ended by the hard-charging Warren. Both riders stayed upright, but Lux, Gonzales and Mueller closed the gap. Warren ju.mped past Martinez over a downhill jump to take the lead as the five froot-runners distanced themselves from the rest of the field. Lux tried Martinez in the next turn, but had the door slammed shut. The two riders entered the back section side by side, with Lux emerging in second. Gonzales and Mueller also tri.ed to get around Martinez but tangled with each other. For the remaioillg laps, the order stayed Warren, Lux, Martinez, Gonzales and Mueller. Lux took the second moto wire to wire, foJlowed by Warren. Martinez, Muelle.r and Greg Grant. Results 250 EX: 1. Adam land (Hon); 2. Keevln Sharp (Hon); 3. Andy Anderson (Kaw); 4.
