Eberle, Honnold hot at CRC Motocross Rob Healy (4) led briefly in 250cc Novice action at the Los Angeles County Raceway, but Chris Honnold (156) won both motos. By Greg Robertson PALMDALE, CA OCT. 27 Jimmy Eberle and Chris Honnold aced both motos of the 80cc Beginner and 2S0cc Novice classes, respectively, during round two of the California Racing Gub's ninth annual Sponsorship Series, held at the Los Angeles County Raceway. Jesse Beard led the pack of 80cc Beginners through the lirst tum as moto one began. Eberle followed Beard for a lap before getting around him to take charge. By the midway point of the race, Eberle had a comfortable lead over Beard, but Beard picked up the pace and closed to Eberle's rear fender on the last lap to make for a dose finish. Frankie Pineda got around Richard EuPanks to finish third over Ricky Hemme. . Beard grabbed the second-moto holeshot. Eberle latched on to Beard and shot past within the first few turns. Once out front. Eberle was in total contrbl as he slowly pulled away for the uncontested win. Pineda slipped past Beard and the two riders argued over the runner-up position all the way up until the last lap when Beard crashed. Pineda's 3-2 score topped Beard's 2-3 for the second-place trophy. The only time someone other than Honnold led any part of either 250s:c Novice mote was when N-Style's Rob Healy ran ourfront for half a lap in moto one.. Honnold didn't put a wheel. wrong on his Ultra Trick KX2S0 en route to two runaway victories. Healy finished well ahead of Phil Zackrison and Art Salazar both times out. Mike Gibson led the first 125cc Intermediate moto until going down hard and tweaking the front end of his new Honda. Andreu L,brador picked up the mote win over George LaMonte. Gibson returned with a vengeance to dentinate round two. Labrador held off the motolong charge of LaMonte to claim the overall win. Results P/W (4-6): 1. Shawn Butler (Yam); 2. Walker wins FTA Trials By' David Polson OCALA, FL, OCT. 30 One of the toughest trials of the past year was appropriately nicknamed "Shootout at the Old Barge Canal" by trialsmaster Butch Davidson and the West Coast Club of Florida as the final ~eekend in October brought round two of the FTA Championship Series. The Barge Canal area just south of Ocala features hills that were formed by dredging operations early in the century. SectionS were carefully crafted to challenge all basic skills, but despite a high number of points being lost in in most classes, no one thought the trial was dangerous; it just required precise riding. Cleans were rare and were earned the old-fashioned way - you really had to work for them. Through the eight sections, nothing was easy, Sections four 'and five were set in V-shaped gullies between taU. hills. Riders had to drop into the gully, execute lBO-degree turns against the cambered walls, then climb back out. Section one, however, was tough only because of the ingenious layout. Some Florida winds had knocked down a large number of seven-inch trees on flat ground and. scattered them in every direction. It looked like a lumber truck had spilled its cargo. Riders had to negotiate logs at every possible angle, then face a linal squeeze between two trees that was so tight one rider received a "rib dab"as he jammed body and bike between the trees. The Expert class, once quite predictable. is now one of the hottest classes, with new riders challenging past masters with their trick-r.iding skills and determination. Chuck Walker and his Beta nicked veteran Gas Gas riders Jack Stites and Brock Sattlemeier for the win. The Experts also faced a new chalJenge from last year's Advanced winner, Cary Dame, on his Scorpa, Bill Sheffield took his first 'Win ever in the intensely co~petitive Senior B class. Young Jonathon Belle took the Beginner-ciass win in the dosest contest of the day, with the two top places decided by cleans. Jon may move up soon to challenge his older brother Steven, 10, in the Novice class. Results BEC: 1. Jonathon Belle (Yam); 2. A.j. Miller (Hon). NOV; 1. 1. Vierra (Hon) 4; 2. D. Wenul (Yam); 3. S. Blake blazes at StarWest MX Freeman back at Perris MX By Tony Alessi PERRIS, CA NOV. 3 Chuck Freeman returned after a three-year hiatus from racing and posted the overall victory in the Over 35 Beginner class during the GFI Elsinore Grand Prix warmup held at Perris Raceway. Freeman chose a great day to return since Goat Breker designed an awesome four-mile race track that took racers on a tour around the Perris facility, opening parts of the track that haven't been in use for years. Freeman didn't seem to miss a beat on his Pro Circuit machine and rode with the grace and elegance of a pro, topping the Yamaha of Jay McGey and the Honda of Mike Tryon. Eddie Michettif another former past champion, made his return .to motocross a memorable experience after he too scored the gold in the Over 30 Intermediate class, topping Perris local Bobby Doty. Michetti looked slightly fatigued after the 45-minute race and appeared to have rather swollen forearms at the checkered flag. "Moto mom" Linda Milan battled with the moto lab rats en route to the Women's-c1ass win. Milan. was awesome as she flew high over the double jumps, blasted the beans and shoved her way around the track. Milan greeted the checkered. flag with an awesome heel-clicker for the overall win on the day, Results MORENO VALLEY, CA, NOV. 2 It was a somewhat blustery evening. but Idaho's Levi Blake raced unaffected en route to the 12Sec Intermediate victory during nighttime motocross action held at StarWest Motocross Park. The first moto saw Nevada's Michael Diloreto out front on his AI Holly-tuned YZ125. Diloreto raced unchallenged and was impressive as he flew sideways over the track's double' jumps on his way to a slam dunk over Idaho's Levi Blake. The second moto saw the Blake brothers up front while first-moto winner Diloreto lay knocked out at the base of the tabletop just after the start of the race. Diloreto tangled and went down hard and ultimately did not finish the moto. The Blake brothers battled with 2SOcc Novice rider Randy Clark during the remaining laps with Levi Blake posting the eventual moto and overall win in front of Josh Blake and Randy Smith. The baby boom has started at StarWest as 5year-old James Holly raced his first-ever Pee Wee race and finished a respectable fourth in the SOcc (4-6) starter division. James, son of former National Pro motocross racer Jim Holley, raced with Kyle Smith, also a son of a fonner Pro motocrosser, throughout both motos of racing. Smith and Holley finished behind the night's overall winner, Brandon Spencer. Results Liltl~Track STRTR (4-6); ,. Brandon Spencer (Yam); 2. Nick Hannah (Yam); 3. Brandon Perras (LEM); 4. Pellett LINVlLtE, OH, OCT. 25 Wimer's Racing-Backed Jaren Smith topped the SOcc class in an excellent night of flat track racing action at Honda Hills. With over $2,500 put up for grabs by Roth Racing, hordes of flat track, motocross and speedway bikes took their turns on the finely manicured circuit, with speeds clocked in excess of fast the entire evening. Some of the closest racing of the evening was in. the 50cc division, where Smith flew his Kenny Wimer-prepped PW50 to the checkered flag ahead of second-place Jacob Mohney and local lad Michael Willard. Willard showed flashes of flat track skills inherited from his famous grandpa Dick Klamfoth, who ruled many tracks in the 195Os. Results 50: I. jaren Smith (Yam); 2, jack Murry (Yam); 3.
