EVENTS (Left) Tommy Clowers (112) worked his way to the lead In both motos of the 125cc Pro class In round four of the Trans-Cal Nationals In Ramona, California. (Below left) Mike Morgan speeds to the Over 25-class victory In Frankfort, Ohio. Morgan masters Old Towne MX By Rupert F. Pellett Photo by Mike Lewis FRANKFORT, OH, OCT, 26 West Virginia's Mike Morgan battled his way to the overall in the Over 25 class at this south-central Ohio facility with smooth, aggressive riding and a superior knack for brilHant racing maneuvers in both motos. Mellllw fall temperatures and the previous night's rain were excellent for race conditions, and track personnel kept the circuit in fine condition for the great number of racers. In moto one, Morg~n had to deal with Grove City's Richard Robinson and his mighty Honda, but Morgan and his YZ250 would prevail with a superior start and hard riding. In moto two, Morgan had to fight off the Hondas of both 'Robinson and Clair Story to take the win and ultimately, the overalL Morgan had less luck, however, in the 250cc A .division, as former B, now A, rider Mark "Junior" Burkhart muscled his Honda of Troybacked CR250 to the overall, Results Clowers captures Trans-Cal MX win By Scott Hoffman RAMONA, CA, OCT, 20 Local rider Tommy Clowers lit the track on fire by taking the 125cc Pro win aboard his SMPbacked Suzuki at round four of CMC's TransCal Nationals held at Barona Oaks, Racers traveled to Ramona to gather valuable series points before three separate regions meet for the final two days of racing to determine series champs November 17. In moto one, it was a dogfight to determine who would take the lead, and when the fur settled it was Dustin Nelson followed by Clowers, Jeff Tilton and Donald Upton, Nelson started to pull a good lead on the opening lap as the rest of the field settled into the jump-filled track, Upton and Mike Metzger were the first to make a move to the front. Tilton bowed to the pressure and started to fall back as Upton took over the third spot. Metzger started around midpack and was on the gas, slicing' his way through the field, Metzger railed past Angelo lngrande, put a move on the fading Tilton and set his sights on Upton. Up front Clowers was starting to reel in Nelson, and on the third lap made the pass and quickly started to pull away, Clowers eventuaUy cruised in fOti the easy mota win. Metzger made his way past Upton when Upton misjudged a triple and had to settle for a double, With one lap to go, Nelson gave up second when he slid out on th~ face of a jump, Nelson dropped back to a disappointing third spot. At the finish it was Clowers, Metzger, Nelson and Upton, tn mota two, Nelson was out to prove himself and he pulled the holeshot and never looked back, Nelson was followed by Upton, Clowers ' and Metzger. Oowers made the early pass on Upton and had his sights set on Nelson, but it was already too late. Metzger swapped fourth place with Danny. Smith a few times until Metzger finally made the pass stick, At the finish, it was Nelson with the moto win, but it was Clowers with the overall for the day, Metzger ended up third overall, Results P/W (4-6): 1. Wright winner at Ghosts & Goblins Poker Run By Blil Herndon JACKSONVILLE, OR, OCT, 27 Lisa Wright took home the $500 first-place cash in the Motorcycle Riders' Association's 13th annual Ghosts & Goblins poker run, The first field check came at two and a half miles out. After looping back toward the pit area, the trail then wound its way west, where the A and B courses split for a couple nf miles, Riders found snow on the ground at the top of Kane Creek. After taking in a spectacular view of snow-capped mountain ranges, riders dropped down Kane Creek Wash (once a road, now a rocky, snotty downhill with little or no topsoil to hook knobbies to), Next the trail led up Gall's Creek, Part of the course was in the stream itself, which featured rocks, lots of umbrellas, a littie slippery log jumping and was run mostly in first and second gears. From there the course turned southwe'st toward Footes Creek and Jrongate Lookout for another panoramic view. Then it was on down Forest Creek Road to the junction of Arrowhead Gap, The easy C course rejoined ·the A and B courses here, and everybody crossed the ridge to Jackson Creek, The C loop ended as A and B riders headed for Two-Bit Hill, which included several ugly, rutted, rocky ,approaches to the top, with the nastiest ascent on the left. After leaving the peak of the hill climb, the course meandered through the woods for a jaunt back to the finish check at 38,6 miles for the A riders and about 33 miles for the Bs, AA rider Craig Lyle, on his '95 CRE500, averaged over 48 mph. "I started with everybody else, got a pretty good start, and tried to avoid most of the crowd," Lyle said, Perhaps the best thing about this event was not the good times had by riders today, but where their entry fees went. According to MRA members, the money will be placed in interestbearing accounts to purchase additional lands, support the Blue Ribbon Coalition and back other off-road concerns. This event was said to have grossed $3,840, with over 200 riders, Silvarole quadruples at Hunt Motocross By Michael Harasmlsz HUNT, NY, OCT, 27 Billy Silvarole took the overall wins in the 125cc Expert, 250cc Expert, Over 25 Expert and 16- to 24-year-old classes with an eight-moto sweep at the final race of the year at Hunt Moto Park, About 350 riders turned out to compete on the chaJlenging natural-terrain track, Conditions were excellent with many lines to choose from. Silvarole got out front at the start of the first 125cc Expert moto, with Pete Phillips and Rob Stillwell close behind, Silvarole held on for the win, but second place wasn't decided until the final lap when Stillwe.1l made a pass on Phillips, who finished third, The second 125cc Expert moto had Silvarole out front and Phillips c1o~e behind. Number-one plate holder Joe Ellington was in third, While Silvarole cruised to another w-in, Ellington moved into second on lap three while Eddie VanBallegooyen took over third a lap later, SiIvarole took the win, with Ellington second and VanBallegooyen third, . Silvarole led Phillips and Ellington off the line in the first 250cc Expert moto, with the three finishing in that order, When the 250cc Experts rounded the first tum for their second moto, SiJvarole and PhitJips were out front again. Nex:t season's number-o!le plate holder Greg Meeder was in third. Silvarole rolled to another moto win while Ellington took over second with Meeder third, Silvarole got the holeshots in both Over 25 motos, which carried him to two more wins and the overall Ellington was second in each moto. Third overall went to VanBallegooyen with &-3 finishes, ' Charles Rizzo grabbed the early lead in the first 16- to 24-year-old combined moto with Andrew Miller and Eric DeBadts in. tow. The pack had already rounded the first tuen when Silvarole joined the race, as he had just competed in the Over 25 division, With a birthday in the middle of season, he can enter both classes. By lap two, he was on his way to another 'moto win. Miller was second with Rizzo in third. The second 16- to 24-year-old combined moto had Silvarole taking his eighth win, Miller and Rizzo were second and third again. , Results P/W: 1. Brandon Meier (Cob); 2. Dina Hughson (Cob); 3.
