(Below left) Mickey Fay (13) held off the challenges of Andy Treaser (91) In Pro-Am racing at Diamond Raceway In Roseburg, Oregon. rode side by side until Fay went down, giving T resser an easy win. Tresser sat on the pole position for the 13rider, ZQ.lap Expert main event, in which seven riders held national numbers. Tresser jumped out in front of Fay, Jeff Harsha and Eric Rickman, but the race was restarted due to overenthusiasm on the part of several riders. The second take had Tresser again out front, but when last year's class champion J.P. Simonsen tangled with Californian Jesse Sanchez, action again came to a stop. On the single-file restart, Fay took the lead over Tresser and would maintain the position to the finish. Tresser took second, while Rex Fisher carved past Harsha, Rickman and Steve Mayfield late in the race to net third. Hayfield captured fourth ahead of a shootout among Rickman, Mark Corsetti and Simonsen for fifth, which went Rickman's way. The evening also featured four Amateur classes, showcasing impressive pe.rformances such as Timmy Ricketts' 12Scc A main-event win, which he finalized after getting around early leader Sean Light. Mike Pierce, a former state champion, finished third to the state's top two minibike experts. Pro-Am rider lleau Brown won the Open A main. but it wasn't an easy task as Jesse Miller challenged his every move. Brown. though, won by two bike lengths over MiUer. Miller came back to win the Vintage A main ahead of Kim McKillop and Troy Renfro. In the 40+ final, Tim Navarro won the A main ahead of Craig Renfro and McKillop to complete the Amateur action. The top two riders from each of three heats lined up for the event. Tresser and Mickey Fay Kent superman at Central Valley MX By Tlm Quinn HANFORD, CA, SEPT. 15 Brian Kent wasted no time putting his Valley Cycle and Marine Suzuki in the number-one spot in the first 125cc Novice moto in the Answer/MSR Central VaUey Championships. Hot on his tail were Brandon Jones and Greg "Chicken" Brewer, both on Hondas. Kent quickly opened up a four-second lead by the close of the first lap, leaving Jones and Brewer to battle for second and third. Jones and Brewer would battle from comer to comer for the first hal f of the moto. Brewer would look for a way by, but Jones would not give in. At the midway point, in an effort to capture the inside line at the end of the back straight, Brewer dived underneath Jones only to tuck the front end in a rut and go down. Jones quickly pulled away as the rest of the field went by Brewer, induding a great battle for fourth and fifth between Ben Seville and Justin Cass. Brewer quickly picked up his bike and set his sights on regaining his third-place position. He caught up with the two Suzuki riders, SaviUe and Cass, and easily moved by. Brewer then set his sights on Jones. In the meantime, Kent was long gone. He would dominate the moto and never be chaUenged. Brewer closed in on Jones by moto's end, but was unable to get by. Saville wou.ld maintain fourt!) while Cass dropped out of the top five. Derek Brush had worked up from a dismal start and would find a way into the fifth position at the checkered flag. In moto two, Kent repeated his first-moto performance, pulling off the holeshot and riding away from the field. He headed to the checkered £lag uncontested to take the moto win and the overaU for the day. Brewer and Jones battled again for the other podium positions. This time, though. Brewer got the better of Jones. Cass and Saville battled for fourth. Cass held his ground this time out and Saville had to settle for fifth. The finish order for the moto carried over to the overall scores. Results P/W BEG: 1. Kyk> 8e'gantz. (KTM); 2. Ryan Saville (KTM); 3. Matt Dungan (Yam); 4. Bryce Dafente (Yam); S. R.J. Sanchez. MN, SEPT. 8 Pro dirt track racer Davey Durelle sped to victory during the final asphalt short track event of !he year held at Raceway Park. Once again the partisan auto racing fans were treated to high-speed, side-by-side racing action provided by a full field of expert-ranked dirt trackers. Norb Gregory got a jump on the field during the opening laps of the heat race and was chased by Eric Brouhard, Tim Zemanovic and the rest of the pack. Unfortunately, a crash in tum one involving Randy Triplett brought out the red £lag. Triplett was okay, and was soon back on the starting line. The restart saw Brouhard at the point, followed by Gregory, Verdeen Langland and Zemanovic. After suffering a bad start, Durelle began his charge through the pack and into the lead by the halfway point of the 1Q.lap preliminary. Triplett followed suit and soon was nipping at the heels of the diminutive race leader, but Durelle held on for the ,vin. Langland finished a solid third ahead of Zemanovic Brouhard and Gregory. Holeshot a.ce Brouhard led the main event into the first turn with Zenmanovic, Gregory', Langland, Ron Brisbin, DureUe, Triplett and the rest of the ll-rider field in hot pursuit. Durelle's charge to the front this time was balked by an incident in tum one when he inadvertently slid into the back of Bri bin at high speed. Brisbin was knocked out of sync, but held on for the save. Triplett was behind Durelle at the time and had to think fast to avoid the carnage. "[ saw Davey look back," Triplett said. "He never looks back unless something bad happens." Two laps later, Durelle was in possession of the lead, but was under heavy fire from Zemanovic and Brouhard. Perhaps inspired by an ensuing leather-repair bill, Triplett soon arrived on the scene and sUd past Brouhard for third. Triplett then reeled in the Z-Man in tum one on the last lap to earn runner-up honors. langland slipped past Brouhard to steal fourth place. Gregory and Brisbin finished sixth and seventh. respectively. Raults j 1. Davey Dure.lle (W.R): 2. Randy Triplett (W.R); 3. Tim Zemanovic (Hon); 4. Verdeen Langland (Hon); 5. Eric BrouhaTd (Rtx). Law prevails at Argyll MX By ~Ike Vancil OrxON, CA, SEPT. 15 Steve Law displayed complete mastery over the Old Time Masters at the final round of four motocross racing weekends at Argyll Cycle Park. Law had only a fair start in the first moto, but by lap two he had overcome early leader Mike Kalamaras and in less than a half-lap also passed Daniel Sturgeon. From that point onward, it was all Law.
