Matson the man at Madera MX By Mark Hawkins MADERA, CA, AUG. 31 Dean Matson was the big winner in the ~GFl North Fall Series, taking the overall victories in both 125 and 250cc Pro classes. justin Tieamey grabbed the holeshot and the lead in the first 250cc moto, followed by Matson, Rick Ryan, Nathan Woods and jeremy Deubner. Woods went down in the second comer, leaving the door open for Deubner to challenge wily veteranRyan. While this battle raged, Tieamey had his hands full with the experienced Matson. Matson soon took the lead from Tiearney as Ryan got out of shape, leaving the inside open for Deubner, who tried to cut u.ndemeath but washed out and went down, dropping out of the top five. At about the halfway point, the running order was Matson, Tiear.ney, Ryan and Jeff Tilton. Ray Crumb was moving ahead after a terrible start, and worked his way up to Ryan's rear fender. With the moto winding down, everyone seemed to settle into their running positions. Matson took the checkered £lag, followed by Tieamey, Ryan, Crumb and Tilton. As the gate fell for moto two, Tiearney once again grabbed the holeshot, but Matson took the high line and the lead around the sweeping first turn. Tieamey had trouble navigating the next ,section and left the door open for the hardCcharging Crumb. Matson started to open up a sizable lead over the second-place Crumb, who had his hands full with Tieamey charging up his tallpipe. Behind Crumb and Tieamey was a threerider battle for fourth among Duebner, Ryan and Tilton. Woods eventually came out on top in this battle, leaving Ryan and Duebner behind. Meanwhile, Matson was all alone in the lead with Crumb and Tiearney battling for second in every comer. When the checkered flag came out, it was once again Matson taking the moto victory and the overall. 1n second place was Crumb, who finished third overall. Tieraney was third in the race and second overall. Fourth in the moto was Woods with jifth overall. Rounding out the top five in the moto was Ryan, who would receive fourth overall. Detwiler rules Rock River Observed Trials By Bob Becklng POLO, lI., SErf. 15 Ktistina Detwiler took the Y9uth win by means of a tie breaker in observed trials at the Rock River Riders c1ubgrol\Uds. Three sections were set in a quarry, including one which featured a 1D-foot pile of crushed rock with the traction of mud or snow, Section 11 was a popular gathering spot for spectators since it had a lot of creek riding as well as some large piles of concrete rubble. The sections were within easy walking distance from each other. A total of 11 sections were ridden in three loops, in addition to the four Youth sections. Detwiler and Colin Howarth were tied with zero points after their rides, and a Novice section was ridden to break the tie in Detwiler's favor. The Vintage class was close with only 10 points separating first and fourth places. Stan Howarth, Ron johnson and Dave Rohrschneider dominated their respective classes. john Wellenstein edged Eric Miller for first in the Ad vanced class by three cleans. It was a treat to watch young Jesse Wellenstein in the Expert class. He has progressed from a Pee Wee 50 to riding Nationals in just a few years. Results YJ'H: 1, Kristina Detwiler; 2. Copher conquers Washougal MX By Pat Dougherty WASHOUGAL, WA, SEPT. 8 Honda-mounted Steve Copher of Sandy, Oregon, took the overall victory in the 250cc Intermediate class with a gutsy performance ahead of Travis Murphy and Tom York. Murphy emerged with the holeshot, with Copher in his shadow. York was able to get by Copher for second, but when Murphy went down in a powdery berm, Copher vaulted by York for the first-moto win. Between motos, medics were attending to Copher's hands, which had no fewer than five huge, peeled blisters. Murphy holeshot the second moto as well, followed by JR. VielIe, then Copher and York. Copher endured the pain with a third-place start. Murphy made no mistakes this time and was flying through the famous Washougal whoops section, adding to his lead each trip through. Vielle slarted to fade and lost several positions, all but guaranteeing Copher the overall if he could soldier on. Murphy won, followed by Copher. York charged back toward the front after a faIl in the first lap. Multi-time National Amateur 125cc Junjor Champion Mike Corder wrapped up his first l2Scc Intermediate win ahead of Mike Storm and Eric Williams. These three riders put on a great show, with Storm getting his first holeshot on a 125 at Washougal in the first moto. But it was Corder performing more consistently to take the overall. Contingency prizes were awarded during and after the races, presented by Scott USA, AXO, Motul, Fox, Smith and many others. The biggest prize was in the l25cc Beginner race that saw David Coffey of Woodland, Washington, collect a brand-new Bell Moto 6 helmet for his win, Results 50 STK: J. Kory Huffman (KTM); 2.
