Stamm the man at Variety Hillclimb By Bud Northrup Photo by Mark Lewis OlTAWA,lL,SEPT.1-2 Marc Stamm won the 400cc and SOOcc classes and claimed his sixth fast-time award of the year on the first day of the Variety Riders of Otiawa Hillclimb. Stamm topped the 400cc class on a borrowed YZ400 in 3.468 seconds, ju.st good enough to bea~ hard-riding Steve Shafer, who turned in a 3.498-second ride. Current class point leader Paul Hackbarth carded 3.669 seconds for third. Stamm went on to post the winning time of 3.22S seconds in the SOOcc class. Andy Fortner's 3.304 was good for second, while Jason Northrup's 3.329-second ride took third. Northrup £lew his Sportland Yamaha over the top to post a winning 3.642-second time on his first ride in the Stock Exhibition class. Eric Wheelwright claimed second-place money with a 3.780-second run on his YZ2S0. Luke H:aas rode a CR2S0 to a third-place payoff in 3.871 seconds. Wheelwright blasted over the top in the 400cc Exhibition class with a first-round time of 3.316 seconds. Jackie Mason had a 3.416-second time on his first ride to take second place into the break. On the second try, Northrup £lew an RM2S0 over the hill in 3.3S0 seconds, good enough for second as Wheelwright's time held up for the win. Lloyd Haas set the first-round fast time in the Open Two-Stroke Exhibition class at 3.126 seconds. Cousin Luke Haas was close behind him at 3.143 seconds. In the second round, Northrup launched his CRSOO over the top, landed hard again and shot past the restraining fence, dealing the clubhouse deck a glancing blow and recording a time of 3.020 seconds. Fortner delivered a similar ride, including tagging the deck, for a 3.096-second time. Lloyd Haas went all out, attempting to reclaim the lead on his second ride, and crashed at 110 feet. His first-round time was good for third behind Northrup and Fortner. Jerrod Lindquist claimed 'the Open FourStroke Exhibition-class win with a 3.341-second time on his Kawasaki climber. Bob Fisher grabbed the second-place cash on his 1200cc Harley with a second-round ride of 3.403 seeonds, and Bob Urnikis cashed in at third on his 1000cc Kawasaki with a 3.750-second time. Parsons CARLSBAD, CA, SEPT. 7 Brian Hobbs took two wire-to-wire moto wins in the Beginner class at Carlsbad Raceway. Moto one saw Hobbs followed by Steve Latham, Danny Lucciardi, George Colletti and Ray Valenzuela. In the second tum, Colletti got around Lucciardi and Latham to take over second. Dan Muff charged from si~th, getting around Valenzuela and Lucciardi by the third lap and setting his sights on Latham, who almost stalled the bike in the grandstand sweeper. Just as Muff had dosed to within striking distance, he hit the dirt in a slippery berm, allowing Latham to get away and Lucciardi and Valenzuela to pass before Muff was able to remount. By lap four, Valenzuela was under attack from Bill Bowman. LU'cciardi was looking for a way to get around Latham before Bowman and Valenzuela caught up. On the sixth lap, as the riders appeared from the woods, Lucciardi and Valenzuela had been replaced by Bowman and Muff and now were playing catch-up. Bowman would finish behind Hobbs, followed by Colletti and Lucciardi, who was able to catch the front-runners on the last lap. Muff and Bowman were able to get around Latham on the last lap to complete the top five. Second-moto action again saw Hobbs with the holeshot, chased by Latham, Lucciardi, Muff and Colletti. In turn two, Colletti went down, handing fifth place to Bowman as Muff passed Lucciardi for third. Valenzuela again ~ade his way to the 'front, pressuring Bowm.an for his spot. Colletti had remounted and looked poised to break into the top five. Hobbs had put distance between himself and Latham, leaVing Latham to worry about Lucciardi and Bowman, who ben.efited as Muff threw it away out of the crowd's view. By lap four, Colletti had moved up behind Valenzuela, passing in the next turn. A frantic charge enabled Colletti to dispose of Lucciardi and Bowman with only two laps remaining. Colletti now had Latham in his sights and pressed even harder, getting around him with one lap to go. On the last lap, Valenzuela moved all the way up to third, with Bowman.fourth and Latham fifth. Christianson claims cup at Brainerd Road Race By Paul James BRAINERD, MN, AUG. 24-25 Glen Christianson became the Central Roadraciog Association's mst two-time winner of the prestigious Framstad Cup when he led the race from start to finish on his TZ250 at Brainerd International Raceway. The Framstad Cup is a handicap shootout race created in 1991 to honor the memory of CRA founding member Don Framstad. Christianson, who has been involved with the CRA since ]975, is among the many who'considered Don Framstad a good friend. ''It's just a thrill to win this race," Christianson said. "Of course, 'the biggest thrill was winning it the first time, but i~s unusual and exciting to have won it twice because of the challenge of the handicap format. You have to keep your head down, because you know there are faster bikes behind you shaving 10 seconds off your lead every lap. And by the time you see them closing in, it's too late." YZF7S0-mounted Greg Fryer got within sight of Christianson, but couldn't quite overcome his last-wave handicap and finished fourth. Podium finishers Jeff Japs, on a GSSOO, and Mark Dargis, aboard an FZR400, started in the same wave as Christianson and kept the pressure on him throughout the race. Christianson was chasing a high-speed stability problem aU weekend and eventually got his Power no Racing Fuel-sponsored TZ's front end sorted out during Sunday morning practice. "1 was able to run wide open in sixth gear going into tum one, and that dropped three seconds off my lap times," he said..."Untii 1 got the suspension dialed in, I wasn't willing to ride it as fast as it was capable of gOing." Essary wins another at Thunder II Speedway BYM.Sober VALLEjO, CA, AUG. 30 Young speedway rider Ian Essary won his second consecutive Saturday Night Thunder II Handicap main event. Jimmy Sisemore pushed the issue from the SO-yard line, immediately jumping ahead of fellow SO-yard-Iiner' Bast and 30-yard starter Robert Curry, who would fall in lap two and fail to finish the race. The running order changed little on the fast, slick Solano County Fairgrounds oval until the finallap. 'Bast had moved to third place and was pres~ suring Ferris, who was hot on Essary's rear tire, looking for a way around. In the final tum, Ferris went in too fast and, rather than take out Essary, opted to straighten up, which set him on a beeline for the tum four wall. Ferris did the only thing he could to save. himself - he went
