U's very hard to pass him, especially in four laps. Oxley wh.o hugs the PVC all the way around, waited for an opening and got it on the last lap. Schwartz got a little too high coming ou t of four and Oxley was right there, held the gas on and won the drag race to the checkered by the width of a tire. Castro was third with McConnell fourth. The field was tightly packed for the Handicap main. Castro, Odom and Jesse Finch all lined up on the 40. John Aden and Pfetzing were on the SO, with Schwartz, McConnell and Steve "Bad Boy" Lucero on the 60. As is becoming a habit, Castro got overeager and the red was out. On the second try, Odom blasted into the lead with Finch and Pfetzing in pursuit. Odom got a comfortable lead on the field and left the fight for the second and third spots to Finch, Pfetzing and McConnell. As the laps wore down, it became apparent that this was the way they were going to finish, and indeed it was. Results SCR: I. Brad O"ley (Wes); 2. Bobby Schwartz (Wes); 3. SEPT. 8 Tom McGrane Jr. took a pair of wins at Shippensburg Speedway's closing short track of the season in the Sportsman and 600cc A finals. McG,ane ,took the Sportsman lead from holeshot artist Mike Varnes, with Yoder and Ace Phillips close behind.. Varnes slipped back to fourth after four laps, with Ken Yoder moving up to pressure McGrane for 10 laps. McGrane, wh'tl is in his final Amateur season, held a tight inside line on the fairly wide black-groove track to win by a length. . Mike McKee grabbed the holeshot in the 600cc A final, but he slipped slightly in turn four with McGrane taking the lead. McGrane's teammate, Mike Klopp, held third, with Dallas Baer a close fourth. The order stayed the same until the 10th lap when Klopp drifted a little high off the second turn l letting Baer take over the third spot. McKee led Jim Haas and Roy Miller in the 2SOcc A final. Miller took over third at the end of the third lap. From there on, the top five stayed the sam~ with about a four-length cushion between each. The best of the Amateur finals was by far the 8Scc division, which has emerged as the most entertaining class to watch in the latter part of the season. Ray Lied took the lead out of turn two, but on the second lap, Klinefelter took to the outside of Lied and completed the pass for the lead. Lied began to slip off the groove as Brian Phillips Jr. and Jared Nees got by him on the fourth and fifth laps. Mees tried to go under Phillips in the latter laps but lost traction, slipping several lengths back, while Phillips tried to Hnd a way by Klinefelter. The win went to Klinefelter, with Phillips in second and Mees third. Results 55 (7-8): 1. Frankie Locke (LEM); 2. Nicholas Hen£tenon (KTM); 3. Chris Shank (Yam). 250 A: 1. Mike McKee (Suz); 2. REIDSVILLE, NC, SEPT. 1 Side by Side Promotions brought the first round of the AMA District 29 Fall Series to Rolling Hllls Cycle Park in Reidsville, North Carolina, where Darrell Bell roosted the competition in the 35+ and 40+ classes. Bell bested the 12-rider field in both motos in the 35+ division, while Honda of High-Points" Donnie Foster secured second with a 2-2 score. South Carolina's Thomas Perkins rounded out the top three. Bell made things look almost easy as he motored his big bore away from birthday boy Mark Smith in the first 40+ moto. Smith, who is new to the class, scored a solid second. Benny Stone was third.. Bell quietly moved away to capture the second-moto win, while Smith ran into major problems and recorded a DNF in moto~two, allowing Auman Parrish to step in. Billy Privatte worked his way up to third by moto's end, but Stone still took third overall. Adam Overcash swept the 80cc (12-15) division, with Bell's son Derrick taking second overall. Zac Kutschenko came 'in third. Suzuki of Winston-Salem rider Bobby Ranker bested the Supermini racers to take both moto wins while Overcash was back. for second. Jason LaPlante took third. Pro Racing was dominated by Jjm Neese, who missed much of the AMA Pro Nationals with an injury and is sticking close to home, picking off win after win wherever he goes. This is Neese's way 0'£ keeping costs down and income high in preparing for the upcoming East Coast AMA Supercross/National Series. Neese manhandled the competition en route to a four-moto sweep of USee A and 2SOcc A racing. Tilden Styron grabbed second in both classes. Brandon Turlington got away from the tobacco farm long enough to round out the top three in 2SOcc. A racing, while David Price made up for a hard first-turn crash in 125cc A moto one to charge back through the pack and net the final podium spot in 125cc A at the end of the day. Parsons' MORENO VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 7 Alex Zapata showed flashes of brilliance in Vetclass action at Starwest. Zapata led at the start of the first moto, followed by Bryan Petrie, Ed Bustillos, Jim Brad. bury and John Turner. In the second turn, Petrie dived under Zapata for the. lead. Zapata looked to the inside and outside of the next three turns to get around Petrie, finaJly pulling it off. Turner had disposed of Bradbury and Bustillos to move into third and set his sights on Petrie, leaving Bradbury to fend off Scott LaRosh. While Zapata distanced himself from the pack, Turner closed to within striking distance of Petrie and LaRosh closed on Bradbury. LaRosh made the pass two turns later. [n third, Bustillos was closing on Turner and Petrie. Petrie did a big grandstand double, leaving Turner to regain the lost distance. To Turner's surprise, Bustillos - who had closed the gap with the help of the same double - passed Turner for third with two laps to go. . Back in the pack, Bradbury had closed back in on LaRosh and was challenging for fifth on the white-flag lap. Halfway through the last lap, Bradbury tried to pass LaRosh only to throw it away. Zapata would finish first, followed by Petrie, Bustillos, Turner and LaRosh. Petrie took the mot<>-two holeshot with Jim Hensley, Zapata, Turner and Bustillos in tow. On lap two, Hensley went down exiting a tuml leaving Petrie to fend off Zapata. Hensley's mistake also allowed Turner and Bustillos to improve their positions. Just when it looked as if Petrie would offer Zapata some resistance, Petrie threw it away, allowing Turner into second with only two laps remaining. Upon remounting. Petrie got under way directly in front of Hensley, who had passed Bustillos on the prior lap. As Hensley looked to the outside of Petrie for the pass, he fell, eliminating all chances of a top-five finish. By the last lap, Zapata had distanced ~lf from Turner. With two turns remaining. Petrie was within striking distance of Turner. Petrie and Turner came over the last- jump togethe; with Turner taking second by a wheel. Results: 50 MOD BEG: 1. Brady Huntley; 2.
