Chris Caplinger put his ATT< out front on the start, followed by Chris Thiele, Leivan, Leigh Letellier Ken Yount and Chad 8usenbark. Near the end of lap one, Thiele made his bid for the lead, but it was short-lived as he blew a comer and severely bent his shift lever. Thiele would continue on in second position for the first two laps before heading to the pits to make repairs. At the conclusion of lap three, Caplinger pitted for fuel, and after lap four Leivan did the same. About this same time, Caplinger began to suffer rear brake problems and he dropped away from the lead pack. His position was taken over by hard-charger Thiele, who had put himself back into contention. Going into the sixth and final lap, the order was Letellier, Leivan, Yount, Busenbark and Thiele, all of whom were separated by only 16 seconds. Yount would be the first to drop off, suffering his first mechanical problem of the season with a broken chain. Shortly afterward, fatigue began to set in for Busenbark as he , slowed and settled for fourth. Back up front, Letellier and Leivan continued to battle for the win, and when Letellier bobbled in the creek with a lapped rider, Leivan was there to snatch the lead. From that point, Leivan aimed his Surdyke Racingbacked WR 250 toward the checkered flag to take the win, just over 15 seconds ahead of the battle for second between Letellier and Thiele. Letellier kept his KTM ahead by a bike length to claim second. Phillips dominates at Ocala Hare Scrambles By Kyle Myers OCALA. FL, AUG.l8 Mike Phillips scored a hat trick by winning the third and final round of the HSKS/ Florida Motosports Racing Summer Hare Scrambles Series held at Florida Motosports Complex. Phillips won the AA division by two and a half minutes, just like he had in the first two races held at Reddick and Williston. When the first row of A- and AA-class riders left the starting line, Bobby Moriarty led the AA class as Phillips Wlis left sitting on the sfarting line, After three kicks, Phillips shot off the line and never slowed down. By the end of the motocross sectio~ Phillips had moved into second just ahead of joe Dacosta, Berry Kern and Dave Fauinto. At the end of the first of five laps. Phillips had opened up a 4S-second lead over Moriaty. With each passing lap, Phillips had more of a' lead on his HSKS-backed CR500, Moriaty finished second on a 125. The battle for third came down to the last lap. With five miles to go, Dacosta~ Kern and Fau tino swapped positions several times, with Dacosta coming out on top over Kern and Faustino. Carmichael cannonball hits Milton Motocross By Neal R, Thomas MILTON, FL, AUG. 17 Ricky Carmichael of Team Green came to ride the seventh round of the West Florida MX Summer Supercross Series, and the results were no less then what would be expected from a recordbreaking nine-time national amateur champion. The mixed 125cc A and B class was dispatched quickly with Carmichael taking the holeshot and win in both the heat race and main event. Runner-up Ronnie Ramsical and Stevie Williams in third were not demoralized by any means and continued to ride hard. They may have even thought they had a chance when Carmichael went down in a slow comer, losing half of his lead. However, he remounted almost as quickly as he dismounted and rocketed back to another big lead and the win. 1n the Open Money class, Carmichael decided to ride his Pro-Circult-backed Kawasaki 125 even though all the other riders were on 250s. , This made getting a good start dificult and may have contributed to his being passed early in the heat race by local hotshoe Ricky Palmer on his A&B-backed Honda, although Carmichael would fight his way into the lead by the end of the race. The Open Money main event started off so.mewhat anticlimatica11y as Palmer got stuck in the gate, He then began a charge that ended as abruptly as it began when overexuberance caused him to catch the pack a little too quickly, rear-end a rider, brake a clutch perch and end his night. Kevin Knight ended up with the holeshot ahead of Elam and Carmichael, who was on the move and passed Elam in the turn after the largest step-up jump, and immediately began to pressure Knight for the lead. Carmichael showed him his front wheel but Knight held on. On the second lap, Carmichael bounced himself into the lead over a steep-faced step-up following the whoops. From that point, on he was out front and pulling away. Knight was in a lonely second with a battle behind him that included Elam fighting to hold onto third, Young blitzing up to fourth and Silcox sneaking past several riders to finish fifth, Results P/W B: 1. Fortner fastest at King City Hillclimb By Bud Northrup MOUNT VERNON, IL, AUG. 18 Andy Fortner flew his Honda CR500 to the overall fast time for the hillc1imb at the King City Dirt Riders' clubgrounds. Oub members did a fine job of preparation. Because of a lack of rain, however, the l00-foot hill was very dry and offered little traction. Times last year had been as low as 2.25 seconds with 2.5-second runs a frequent occurrence, but the conditions on this day wouldn't allow those type of times, Bob Fisher had thrilled the crowd with a high-flying 2.931-second run on his 1200cc Open-class Harley to set the fast time at intermission of the amateur portion of the event, only to see Mike Schobert, also in the Open class, put Tom Compton's 1325cc Kawasaki high over the top in 2.882 seconds to take the fast-time trophy. Fortner was even faster, however, as he flew his Honda CR500 over the top in 2.828 seconds in Open Exhibition--class action. Nine-year-old Cody Mason blew away all the older riders in the Youth dass with an excellent 4.012-second high-flying ride on his YZBO, National champ Anthony DeHart took second place on his Honda in 4.468 seconds, while national number two Matt Weaver finished third in 4.503 seconds on his KXBO. Cady's older brother jackie finished fourth on his CRBO, with Becky Williams claiming the fifth spot on her Kawasaki. DeHart won in the 200cc dass for the second day in a row with a 3.922-second run on his YZ125, with Scott Sheets picking up the second spot on his D1125. justin Meyers came in third on his KX125 and Dale Myers finished fourth on his vintage Suzuki 185. jackie Mason claimed his second straight 250cc win with an excellent 3.066-second ride on his Downers Grove Honda CR25O, drawing closer in the points race to class leader Brent Stewart. Stewart, riding his ultratrick, superquick jackson Performance Yamaha YZ250, finished second with a 3.158-second performance. Fortner, aboard his Suzuki RM25O, topped the hill in 3.248 seconds for third place. Roy Senaldi claimed fourth on his YZ250, with jason Northrup filling out the top five on his stocklength Yamaha YZ250. Results MINI B: 1. Josh Sledge (Hon); 2. Riley Mullens (Yam); 3.
