Clark cranks at Perris MX By Tony Alessi Cooley gets it at Carlsbad MX By Seyn:t0ur Bettys CARLSBAD, CA, JULY 28 Chris Cooley piloted his YZ125 to the 125cc tnteuned-iate-class win at round three of the Racing Enterprises Summer Series, held at Carlsbad Raceway. Promoter Frank Thomason pulled a fast one on the racers and changed the direction of the race track, which was also freshly groomed. l~s not too often that the rough, natural-terrain Carlsbad course gets tractor work, and many racers were caught off guard by the track's prime condition. Colin Eberly nabbed the 125cc Intermediatedass lead in the first moto, leading Cooley and Kurt Rood. Several Pros were mixed in with the Intermediates, allowing Eberly to pull away from his two main ri vals. Rood hounded Cooley and found his way past on the fifth lap when Cooley spun out in a slippery off-camber section. Just when it looked like Rood had second place wrapped up, he lost his front end in a muddy comer and went down hard. Though he remounted in time to save second, Cooley dosed the gap and sneaked past before the moto's end. Eberly scored a comfortable win ahead of Cooley and Rood. Moto two saw Cooley take command of the lead from the get-go, and he was never challenged. Eberly did his best to close the gap, but was no match for Cooley who later commented that he wa more comfortable in the second mbto. Rood ran s!Tong in the early going, but eventually pulled off the track when his bike began to sputter. Cooley's 2-1 scores earned him the overall win over Ebe.rly'sl-2 showings. AI King made a mockery of the first Over 40 Intermediate-class moto, easily spanking the field. But King was caught off guard by Robert Zingg in the second race, and was forced to settle for second behind Zingg. However, King's second-place finish in the finaJ moto was good enough for the overall win, and he whee lied across the finish line well aware of his victory. Results I 80 BEG: 1. Lance White had a great first moto in the 2SOcc Novice class by charging up from a sixthplace start to finish first by the end of the moto. Chris Weedon led five of the six laps but slowed his pace too much late in the mota and was passed by White for the lead. Hard-charging Clark finished off the molo in third place, right on the heels of Weedon, who appeared to be struggling with fatigue. Weedon picked up in the se..cond moto where he left off in the first moto by leading for the first two laps. Rudy Rodriquez made his presence known by passing Weedon fo'r the lead, but before Rodriquez had a chance to get too comfortable he too was passed by Clark. Once out front, Clark pulled away with authority and went on for the moto and overall victory, while first-moto winner White was stuck in traffic for much of.the race and finished a disappointing fourth behind Weedon, Rodriquez and the nigh~s overali winner, Clark. Kyle Campbell surprised the 60cc Novice division by winning his debut ride in the class. Campbell, a recent transfer from the 60cc Beginner class, charged to second in the first moto after a hard crash with Intermediate rider Jason Medina. Campbell returned to win the second 60cc Novice moto after early race leader Jarred Brown bailed off, and went on for his first overall victory in the 60cc Novice division. Results r: IT (4-6): 1.
