Yamamoto motors to Spokane HM win By Karin Lang SPOKANE, WA, JULY 20 Ronny Yamamoto led the triumphant return of flat track racing to Spokane as he woo the Pro Twin class in the first half mile event held at the Playfair .Race Course since 1918. _ Yamamoto grabbed the lead in his Pro Twin heat race and again in the Pro Twin main, leaving everyone else in the field to eat his dust. Rex Fisher looked as if he would get by Yamamoto early in the race, but Yamamoto managed to put a lot of track between himself and the field by the fifth lap. Fisher finished second, while Lonny Kopp held on for third. The 600cc race looked much like most Northwest races lately, with Dan Stanley out in front of a pack of 16 riders. Stanley and Jeff Annen shared the holeshot, but Annen couldn't hold it and eventually fell back to ninth. No one ever appeared to challenge Stanley's lead, which grew throughout the race. Mark Corsetti and Jesse Sanchez fought for second, with Corsetti eventually gaining the second-place spot with Sanchez in third. Spokane's Steve Liberty, the local favorite, finished in fourth. The Pro Am race was a drag race for first between Christian Vernon and Todd Hagmann during the early laps, but Vernon's bike blew up and ended his race during the early laps. Hagmann pulled ahead of the pack and held a comfortable lead for the rest of the race over secondand third-place finishers Steven Arndt and Ronnie Reiner. R~ults PRO TW: 1. Ronny Yamamoto; 2. NEW BERLIN, NY, JULY 20-21 Round two of the AMA U.S. Women's Motocross League Outdoor Championship Series sponsored by Kawasaki, Honda, and Acerbis rolled into Unadilla along with the 125/250cc National MX Series and proved to be an exciting class. Kawasaki Team Green guns Kristy Shealy and Dee Wood were on hand to challenge round-one winner Amber Hughes. Top finishers Shelly Hickman, Shelly Kann, and HaUy Whitecotton were also present. Torrential rains pelted the tI:ack Friday, creating a sea of mud and a rider's nigh tmare. Moto one was holeshot by Wood, with Shealy, Kann, Hickman, and Hughes in hot pursuit. Hughes passed Hickman and Kann in the big, rough sweeper before the Gravity Cavity. Wood was pressured into a small bobble that cost her the lead position as Shealy streaked into first wit" Hughes in her wake. Shealy and Hughes raced around the circuit nose-tcrtail in a battle to the finish, with Wood failing Slightly off the pace..The battle for fourth was hotly contested between rivals Kann and Hickman, while an intense battle between WhHecotton, Sherri Stephens, Tanya Roberts, Mollie Bourke, and Melanie McConnell raged behind. At the halfway poiot Wood launched out of Gravity Cavity and careened off of the track. This was all Shealy need to secure the win, followed by Hughes and a disappointed Wood. Hickman took fourtJo. followed by Kann, Whitecotton, Roberts, Bourke, Stephens, and McConnell. Wood holeshot again in the second moto on Sunday, with Shealy, Hughes, Kann, Hickman and the pack clawing for position in front of U,OOO fans. Wood and Shealy quickly put distance on the fjeld, with Hughes trailing in third. Shealy and Wood were putting on a spectacular show for the fans. With just half a lap remaining, Shealys' bike seized and rolled to a stop. Wood raced on to victory, followed by Hughes, Kann, Hickman, and Whitecotton. Sixth place went to Bourke and Tiffany Reed, Roberts, Jessica McConnell, and Misty MacMilijan rounded out the top 10. Wood's 3-1 edged out Hughes' 2-2 score for the overall. Kann squeaked into third with a 5-3 over Hickman's 4-4. Whitecotton finished fifth overall. Results WMN: 1. Dee Ann Wood (Kaw); 2. Amber Hughes (Suz); 3. Shelly Kann (Yam); 4. At the start, it was Cory Snelgrove from Canada roosting into the first comer ahead of Dean, with Dustin Droscha and Bryan Butzin in tow. Eventual second·place finisher Daniel Aulseybrook crashed in the first corner, but quickly remounted and began to charge through the pack. Dean held it on longer going into the left-hand« at the bottom of the leap, taking the inside line away from Snelgrove. Dean looked to be in total control but Aulseybrook, who had just won the first moto of the 50cc Superstock class, remembered all the fast lines and was dosing fast. By the halfway point, Aulseybrook caught Dean and began to pressure him. With less than a bike length between them, Dean took the win in the first moto with Aulseybrook second and Snelgrove third. After a brief intermission to give the riders a chance to cool off from the blistering sun, the field of nine riders lined up for the start of the second moto. This time it would be Dean wi.th the holeshot followed closely by Aulseybrook, Snelgrove, Dorsch, and Butzin in fifth. The race for nrst quickly began to look like a repeat of the first moto with Aulseybrook trying to move on Dean at nearly every comer, but Dean had djfferent ideas as he continued to shut the door time after time. At the halfway point Aulseybrook began to show signs of fatigue (and rightly so, after competing in three previous motos in the 85-degree-plus sun) as he slipped off of Dean's pace. At the checkers it was Dean claiming the overall win, with Aulseybrook getting the nod for second, and Snelgrove rounding out the top three. Results 50 JR (4-6): Calvin Dean (KTM): 2. SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 26 KTM-rider Aaron Makinen_of Auburn swept both motos to take the overall win in the hotly contested 50cc class at KB Racing's Friday Night Supercross. With three of the five races completed, the win puts him in'a good position for the championship in the Carmichael Honda-spo", sored Summer Series. Fifteen riders charged to the first comer and a KTM freight train took shape. Makinen, Matt Spencer, Kyle Plunkett and Stenson Womack were just an orange blur as they completed the first lap. Jimmy Breneisen pushed his Yamaha across the finish-line tabletop in fifth. Womack didn't wait long in fourth and on lap two scooted past both Plunkett and Spencer to take over second. Breneisen got into the action and was also able to get around Spencer and advance in to fourth. Makinen maintained a comfortable lead through the third lap, while Plunkett overcame Womack to take back second. At the checkered nag it was Makinen winning with a clear margin over Plunkett, Womack and Spencer. Breneisen settled for fifth. Yamaha-rider Brian Foster took the early' lead in the second moto. The rest of the pack jockeyed to establish positions, and after the completion of the first lap Makinen had again emerged as the leader with Womack and Foster in second and third, respectively. The KTMs of Spencer and Plunkett wer.e up in front again, closely followed by Breneisen's Yamaha. On lap two, Plunkett rocketed into second while Spencer caught his draft and advanced to third. These position changes were at the expense of a fading Womack and Foster, who stopped to take a soil sample. Breneisen styled his PW into fifth. The top nine riders were satisfied with their positions and kept them to the checkers. Makinen and Plunkett repeated their first-moto one-two finish while Spencer was able to top Womack for third. They were followed by Breneisen, J.D. Moore, Foster, Beau Wiegland and Mason Womack.
