Atkins aces 250cc Pro class at Pueblo Motocro$s By Stacy Jensen 42 PUEBLO, CO, JUNE 16 In an intense battle with a host of 250cc PIOS, Atkins took home the victory with moto wins at the Pueblo Motor Sports Mo.toeross. In moto one, Chad Wallaston jumped into the early lead while Jeremy Hinrich, Mike Boswell, Jason Carns and Scott Fultcher trailed. As riders fJew over Devil's Tower a quarter of the way into the second lap, Atkins moved into seventh and began pressuring Cams, who had dropped back. The track'was extremely rough as riders dropped down into the horseshoe, but the outside line proved to be the one to take as Roswell passed Hinrichs, and Atkins made his bid for sixth. By the second lap Atkins was only a tirelength behind the third-place rider. Meanwhile, WaUaston and Boswell were pulling away. As Atkins came off of Devil's Tower and down thIough the straightaway he hammered the top side of a big sweeper, but Hinrichs maintained his position on the inside and Atkins had to wait until he was again in the horseshoe. Atkins made his move, this time on the inside, and as Hinrichs took the better line Atkins cut across to the outside, shutting the door and taking away the third spot. He was now only four seconds behind the. leaders and on a charge. When the riders disappeared around the back of Devil's Tower, Atkins and Reswell were handlebar-to-handlebar, and by the time they re-emerged Atkins had taken over second position and had Wallaston in his sights. At the completion of the sixth lap Atkins had closed the gap and was a mere one second behind Wallaston. As the two riders came over the small set of tables there was plenty of contact as Wallaston refused to relinquish his lead. Again they headed to the ominous back side of the Tower where only the riders know what occurs. Just as Wallaston and Atkins were making the final left turn before disappearing, Atkins nailed his throttle and took an outside line, passing· into fiIst. On the final lap of the first moto Wallaston feU off of the pace and lell seven seconds behind Atkins. Atkins finished first, with Wallaston and Roswell finishing second and third respectively. WalLaston again came out in front in the second moto, but Atkins was right behind with Roswell, Justin Martin, and Ballett on his tail. Just before completion of the third lap Atkins turned the freeway into his personal property by passing Wallaston. Not to be outdone, Wallaston took the inside of the final tum after the freeway and moved back into first. However, it was a short-Hved victory as Wallaston overshot the benn of a sweeper turn and ran off the track. Atkins held onto the lead for the remainder of the race and WaUaston had to settle again for second. Boswell, Ballett and Todd Robertson rounded out the top five, respectively. Results 50 NOV: 1. Carlson looked great as he rode under the supervision of Honda's amateur race team coor· dinator Bill O1;r in the OISt 125cc Intermediate race, In fact, Carlson had .no competition at all from the Intermediates but did give fits to some Pro riders and even passed World Mini Proclass champion Chris Wheeler on two se.parate occasions. In the end, Carlson ran away from the rest of the riders in all of his race and went on to be the dominant rider of the day. Jason Smith won the 125cc Modified Intermediate classl making his long jouney worthwhile by scoring both moto wins over Mark Desch and Tommy Harrison. Jonathan Shimp was the BOcce holeshot king of the day, but unfortunately Shimp's starts and ficishes did not always match, and he was left out of the winners cirde all day. Billy Payne once again proved himself to be the most solid rider of the BOcc Stock division by posting the overall win. Results P/W STK (4-6): 1, Buddl Bruner (KTM): 2. Chad Cores (LEM); 3.
