der improved his perfomance later with strong wins in both Unlimited Supersport and Superbike. Solidly in the lead in Unlimited GP with two laps to go, Alexander tried to improve on the 1:18s he had been running, scraped the cases in tum 11 and crashed. Wood was likewise struggling, his main problem being spongy brakes on his Kawasaki ZX7 Superbike. Having beaten Alexander, Sweeney now took on Wood in Heavyweight Superbike. Sweeney moved up from third, passed Wood on the brakes going into turn three, instantly pulled out a three-second lead, and won going away, getting down to a rugh 1:16 on a damp track. Sweeney capped rus weekend by also beating Wood's father Jerry in Heavyweight Supertwins. Later in Unlimited GP, Eric Wood held off an on-the-gas Buck Miller to win after Alexander crashed ou t. Certainly the most spirited race of the weekend was Middleweight GP, featuring a long duel between defending champion Peter lllich and Jim Lester. The two were side-by-side for much of the last five laps of the race, Lester having a power advantage and lllich regaining ground on the brakes. Illich was planning a last-lap stuff pass in tum 10. He did not have to play his ace because a rain shower moved in and Lester crashed on the last lap in the slick pavement on the inside of tum six. But then nlich crashed on the last tum. The race was red-flagged, and Lester got the win because he was leading the previous lap. ~ Results UIL S/SPRT EX: 1. Richard Alexander Jr. (Suz); 2. Charles Miller (Suz); 3. Brian Kent (Suz); 4. Simonsen and Charlie Brown gave the hometown crowd something to cheer about after taking heat-race wins in the Expert class. Simonsen grabbed the lead at the start of the Expert main event and had little breathing room as Dan Stanley was right on his TeaT wheel. StanJey nabbed Simonsen, and Simonsen then fell victim to Oregon's Rex Fisher, the fastest rider through traffic. fisher reeled in Stanley but fell short at the linish. Simonsen netted third ahead of Ron Waters, Speedy Kell, Ryan Anderson and Eli Price. Kurt Hawk currently enjoys one of the longest win streaks in the orthwest. Hawk's win streak continued alter walloping the 12rider 125cc A main.
