Johnson jams to Prairie City mini road race victory By Gary Buth RANOiO COROOVA, CA, JUNE 9 Jerry Johnson ran a perfect race to claim victory during Round 5 of the NCMRRA Superbike main event held at the Prairie City SVRA in Rancho Cordova, California, Johnson, after earning the pole position by way of two heat races, elected to start from the rear of the field in the main event. Johnson's decision must have been made based on knowledge gained during earlier starts, for he got the hole shot and led the field through tum number one, Brian Short, in his first-ever Advanced class racel was the surprise second-place starter. Following in third position was the ever-tenadous Mirhael Hannas, As the pack of riders raced through the back section of the course, Johnson went to work and began separating himself from the field, Short, Hannas, John Daker and Tim Rush in fifth followed Johnson throughout lap one. As Johnson steadily pulled away, Short came under attack from Hannas as they climbed up and through the corkscrew, As the battle intensified Johnson gained additional ground as neither Short or Hannas could dispense of one another. Fourth-place Daker came under fire from Rush on lap number three, but Daker held a tight line and slammed the door on Rush in tum one. Short and Hannas again climbed the back section of the track on their way to the corkscrew, Hannas pressuring Short by showing a wheel and letting Short know he was not content with third, The attempted pass did not stick and Short continued to hold the second pOSition, Rush and Daker raced nose to tail down the main front straightaway in lap nutnber four, Rush trying the outside pass in turn' one and making it stick, sending Daker back to fifth, By mid-race Johnson had checked-out with a huge lead, leaving the pack to battle for second place honors, Short was doing a fine job of fending off the aggressive Hannas, while Rush steadily made ground on the dueling duo, Short made his first mistake in an off-eambe.r comer, allowing Hannas to slip by and carrying Rush even closer in the heated the battle for third. Lap number nine saw Jerry Johnson continue to sail toward a sure victory, while Hannas likewise had second place under control. Rush made up ground on Short in turns one and two, only to lose the back-ehd through tum number three. Daker was aJone in fifth and under no preSsure from the other riders in the field. The checkered flag fell on Johnson's huge victory, Hannas following in second and a relieved Short in podium position number three, Results STK: I. Jerry Johnson (Yam); 2. Tim Rush (Yam); 3. Ed Mad a very trick Ossa Phantom was third, Jeff Smith riding a very unfamiliar '74 250cc Husky looked quite comfortable as he won both Over 50 Expert motos, A tip of the hat goes to Arkansas n-de.r Greg Steinbeck who rode the only 125 in the Over 40 Intermediate class and smoked a host of 250s and 500s to a double moto win, Then Steinbeck faced the youngsters and went 1-1 to win the 125cc intermediate class, Another double class winner was Carl Keller, who owns Tyler's favorite restaurant, Armadillo Willie's, Keller said if he won both classes all his class competitors could eat free! Looks like his fellow competitors were hungry. Keller won all four motos in the Over 30 and 2.5Occ Novice classes. The only other double class winner was Honda"mounted Darin Emswiller of Maryland. This guy was flying, He led every lap of every moto to win the 250 and 125cc Expert classes. The wins put Emswiller out front in the National points, and he looks like a sure bet to take both titles.
