Lucero, McConnell fastest at Costa Mesa Speedway By Ela ine Jones COSTA MESA, CA,JUNE 7 Steve "Bad Boy' Lucero and Shawn "Mad Dog" McCoIUlell were the big winners at Costa Mesa Speed w ay Fri d ay n ight as Lu cero w on the Scra tch main and McCoIUl ll topped the Handie cap. Four riders made d irect transfers to the main after working their way thro ugh the Scratch sid e of the p rogram. Bobby Schwartz dr ew the po le. Lucero load e into second with Gary Hicks next d to him in th ree and McCoIUl ll in fou r. Doing it e the ha rd way was Rob Pfetzing who came from the Last Chance heat. He drew the five slot and was racing back-to-hack because of the liming of the two races. The pack broke tigh t off the lin. a nd were close eno ug h to shake hands as they hit the first corner. After the fir s t lap. Lucero had est ablished himself as the leade r. Hicks was running a close second and Pfetzing was hold ing down the th ird . McCo nnell was bring ing up the rear b u t was o n the mo ve . His fi rst vict i m wa s Sch w a rtz. On the White-flag lap he then go t a ro un d Pfet zing. Hicks was n' t going to budge, tho ugh, an d McConnell ha d to settle for third. Schwartz go t by Pfetzing for fourth. The eight that qua lified fo r the Handicap main we re P fe t zi n g . Luce ro . Starting from the 40, McCoIUlell took the low, tight line a nd slithe red under Schw artz and then Ze mke to tak e the le ad . Goi ng rig h t w ith h im was Lucero and in the end it was McConnell who kep t Lucero from a doubl e win. Northrup, who has been a force to be reckon ed with, claimed third while Ra zzo rou nded ou t the field w ith fou rth . In the heats Riverside loca l Steve Lucero had a perfect sco re, as did the High Dese rt's jo hn Ad en . Gary Hicks and Brad Oxley transfer red by virtue of a first and tw o seco nds. Because of bi ke probl ems in h is fi rs t he a t Bobby Sc hwa rtz, with two wi ns to his credit, was forced into a run off wi th Ed Castro an d And y Northrup. He emerged the victor and picked up the last spot. Sch wartz d rew the pole with Hicks in two I an d Luc ero in the mi dd le, thi rd gate. Aden sta r ted fro m g ate four a n d O x ley fi v e . Sc h wa rtz read the ga te to perfec tion an d go t the edge off the line . H icks an d Lucero we re o u t second and thi rd, chasing Schwar tz in to the firs t comer. Schwartz started to pull away and appeared to have the race well in hand but the fickle finger of fate stepped in. As he headed down the back straigh t on the th ird lap the m otor se ized. Hick s was right there an d too k full advanta ge of the clear track. The white flag ca me ou t and Lucero s tarted to close bu t was unable to catch the Riversid e rider.
