McElroy, Hodges trade Lake
Sugar Tree MX wins
By Jay and Sharon Hauser

O:>i,
Th e famous Lake Sugar Tree Motorcross, home to
the Gary Bailey MX School , hosted the eigh th and
Final round of the U.S. Eastern Pro-Am Motocross
Spring Series with great racing and award s.
Honda /Kawasaki of Wi lson /Si-Tec Racing's
Troy Brewer milY ha ve just barel y missed wins
in both the l25cc A and 250cc A classes at the
day's event, but he came away w ith the bigger
achi evement of taking series championships in
both of the top classes . As w ith all of the top 10
series winners, Brewer cashed in on great loa ds
of contin gencies and awa rd s.
Troy Brewer (393) grabbed the ho leshot
ove r moto-one winner Brian McElroy
(135) and 125cc A overall winner Mitchell
Hodges (26), dur ing round eight of the
U,S, Eastern Pro-Am Motocross Spr ing
Series at Lake Sugar Tree MX.
Brewer looked like the man to bea t as he
shot d own the start hill to grab the holeshot in
mot o one of 125cc A action, but Florida Yamaha
rid er Brian McElroy had other plans. McElroy
took over the lead fore the end of the first lap
wh ile a slip sent Brewer back to fourth. The ProCircuit Honda of Terry Kennedy hooked up to
the rear fender of M it ch el l Hodges Team
Green I Bailey MX School Kawasaki, and the pair
worked into second and third behind McElroy
while Brewer fought off Tony Rice and Ma rk
Willia ms. Ho dges made a strong run at McElroy
but got side-railed coming up the finish line h ill
a n d pitched it back to third whil e McElro y
checked out. Hodges managed to work back
pa st Kennedy within a lap and took the runnerup spo t by mot e 's end w ith Kennedy holding off
a h ard-ch arging Brewer. William s edge d out
Rice for th e fifth postion .
Hodges round ed the perfectly mani cu red
first turn with a stro ng holeshot a' th e 125cc A
rid ers took to battl e for moto tw o. McElroy was
seco nd while Williams timed the gate well and
was ru nni ng a solid third over Ken ned y for the
first lap, but Kennedy was on the gas an d moving up to try and run down the lead pai r.
Brewer pull the same tr ick as in moto one
and fell from fourth to eighth on lap one, and he
was forced to pla y catch up to the field . In th e
meantime McElroy had displaced Hodges but
had not shaken him off his tail, and their battle
saw the pair pull aw ay by lap three. As the leaders took the w hite flag it looked as if McElroy
was going to add his final moto win to his per fect streak for the day - as he had handily won
both ou tings in 250cc A and Plus 25 A racing bu t it was not to be.
" 1 cou ld feel something sta rting to go wro ng
with the clu tch, so I figured I'd just cruise it in
for the w in," McElroy said . But when I launched
the big jump on the back side o f th e lake, m y
clutch lever ju st came to the gr ip with no force.
At that monent 1 knew I was in troubl e."
