Bateys' impressive performance started at
the drop of tilt' green flag when he took the lead
at the first comer and ran awa y from the rest of
the fie ld . After three laps the race was red flagged when Light Smith Racings' Honda lost
it s bottom end a nd spewed oi l aU over 'the
entrance of tum one. When the race restarted
Batey continued his charg e while peeling offiap
times in the low 1:205,dropping to a best time of
1.18.63, jus t a half second off the track record
held by Glenn Szarek.
At the 41-minute mark Batey had alread y
lapped the entire field and hadn't even made it
to the fir.;t scheduled pit stop. Stanton. who also
had a smooth flight left the rest of the field dicing for the number-two position. A second flag
wa s thrown with .w minutes remaining when
another rider had complications again in tum
one . At this point. Team Suzuki Endurance had
a two-la p lead on the rest of the field.

Scott Stum p made a visit to Fast Track Racings
season-o pener at Twin· Cities Raceway and
daimed victory in the 600cc Pro class.
When the light wen t green. F. Reed Bertolino
hit the bankin g of tum one fir.;t followed by J.J.
McDo well . Stum p too k to the h ig h line and
pulled in behind Bert olino on the back stretch.
He tried a pass in thr ee but fell short, only to
end u p side by side at the end of lap one. This
tim e Stump was firs t down the back stra igHt.
Lap three saw Stump at the head of the pack followed by Bertolino, William Brock III and Scott
Heir s. The top fou r held their position for the
next several laps while Samuel Lowe and Doni
Holeman battled on the narrow groove for fifth.
Holeman got the position and a sho t at Heirs on
the ou tside in turn three on the last lap . Heirs ·
came back on the inside only to take a wild ride
out of four when his chain came off and gave up
fourth to Holeman. The final orde r was Stump,
Bertolino, Brock, Holeman and Heirs.
In the SOOcc class Kevin HUer jumped into
the lead followed by Shawn Th om as, Kev in
Hilbert and Chris Hathaway. Over the next few
laps the pack tightened, with Hath away trying
everything to g et past Hilbe rt. On la p fiv e
Thomas took the lead on the back stretch . Then
out of turn four so m eth in g ha p pen ed to
Thomas ' motor and he slowed abruptly and was
struck by Hiler, who went down. This brought
out the red flag and a single-file start was soon
to follow. Hathaway took full adv antage of the
restart by going to the front followed by Hiler.
In the front straight Hilbert took over seco nd
and set out after Hathaway, whose KX500 now
sport ed an orange glow in the dark rear d isc.
While Hathaway' s brake faded, Hilberts ' charge
forward gained momentum. On the last com er
Hilbert went in high only to slip off the groo ve
in a last shot at Hathaway. The orde r at the finish was Hathaway, Hilbert, Hiler and Terry
Phillips .

New Zealand's 1986 250« champ Nevil Algie
looked determined to return to form as he took
four fir.;t places and wa s narrowly edged at the
line for his only second -place finish during the
WERA Sportsman Series event at Gratta n Raceway Par k.
Algie's fifth win was stolen at the end of the
Heavyweight Solo 20 race when local ace Brian
Gibson passed Algie by a hair at the checkered
flag. Disappointed but undaunted, Algie came
back Sunday to go three for four.
Sa tu rday wa s not a g ood da y for Algie.
Coming ou t of turn 10 onto the beg inning o f
th e st ra igh t, he suffered a nasty high-side in
morn ing practi ce, but so ld iered on for his firs t
win of the weekend in the Middleweight Solo
20 race. In what was to become a tense week·
end riva lry, St. Louis Honda's Jeff Kram er was
sur prised by Algie in th e laller stages o f th e
raC when Algie took aw ay h is Hne throu gh
e
tum one and made the pass stick. With a dear
track ahead of him, Algie qu ickly put over half
the stra igh taway on Kramer by the final lap .
Both leaders were turning low 29s to se t the
pace for the weekend.
Their biggest battle occu rr ed in Sund ay' s
Super.;port B Expert event. GSXR750-mounted
Kram er got the hol esh ot and an immediat e
three-seco nd lead on Algie. Constantly squaring
off in tum one, Kramer would pull away on the
stra ight. Algie couldn't catch Kramer's draft but
was never.far behind. By the fourth lap the lead ers had distanced themselves from the pack by
the length of the straightaway, and by the last
lap ZX6R-mounted Algie made a last-ditch
eff ort but had to s et tl e for se co nd b ehind
Kramer. GSXR750-mounted Ma r k Oldham
fought his way through traffic to secure third in
front of Ho nda F3 rid ers Jim Va ncil and
Megabucks Racing's Buck Wort h ington , who
took fourth an d fifth res pectively. It was only
Kramer's thi rd time on the track and his firs t
tim e ru nn ing the course in WERA's infamous
counterclockwise race di rection.
local favorite dirt tracker I road racer Dave
Knapp took four wins on his new Rota x 670
which showed a sign ifican t power advantage
over the competition in all of his events .
