ENDURO NETRAE nduro Series decided to throw out th e fifth check. One hundred sixty riders en tered the eve nt, and of them 142 turned in cards at the finish . Along the way he fought off a ttacks from NETRA regu la rs James Kelly and Jerry Madore, and asid e from a hair-r aising burn at the next-to-lastcheck, came into the victory with a com fortable one-po int adv antage on his '95 CRE. . . The no rmally relentless King Phillip terrain granted riders a respite this year, since the annu al spri ng rains held off lon g enough to guaran tee a dry d ay . Tempera tures p eakin g in th e low '70s and sunny skies certainly made it a lot more bearabl e . "We like to work ou t every pa rt of the body," club member George Law rence is fond of sayi ng, an d the Wrentham terrain certainly does d o that. The trails are ge ne ra lly ope n and easily ridab le at trail rid in g speeds, but at an enduro pace things are m uch di fferen t. The never- ending rocky trail s and num erous " boneya rd s" of ro ck s team up to ensure that the re is no place yo u can tak e yo ur hands off the bars, e v en for a n ins t a n t, unl e ss you' re stop p ed. A little bit of trouble at the King Phillip can tum into a lot of points by the end of the rid e. To crea te th e enduro, the club laid out a 91-mile cou rse on the route sheet, breakin g d own in to 63 ground mi les with nine checkpoints along the wa y . The on ly trouble they had with th e course occu rred after a group of hi kers cam e on to the cou rse in one forest and tore d own a numbe r o f arrow s.
