Will Robe",. Hess hauls atCentral Virginia Hare Scrambles By John W. Capewell DILLWYN, VA, APR. 28 Brian H ess was back in near-top form, taking the overall win at the Central Virgi nia 100. At this season's opene r in March, last year's Grand Champion an d Team Gree n ride r Hess was seen virtua lly all day long riding behind ano ther Kawi pilot, Moto r Imports/Mark IV rider Robby Deal. Hess just didn't seem to muste r the magic that defined his '95 season. Hess later said that his new bike wasn't q uite dialed in yet and still needed a tittle carb work to beef up the low- and midrange power. "That was March, this is April, and Hess was back in shape for five trips aro und the 7.5-mile loo p set up by the Central Virginia Trai l Riders, finishing in 2:17 :12, five min utes ahead of his nea res t competitor, AA·dass rider Mike Phil ips. Jason Greer fin ished third overall, just 2:40 behind Phillips. Greer pulled an average of two minutes ahead of Rus ty Epperson on each lap to complete his class victory as welt David 'White and We sl ey Mo ra n thu mped the rest of th e 250cc A gu ys by pulling no less tha n six minutes between them and the remainder of the pack on their wa y to firs t- an d second-place class finish es. White comp leted the event fourth overatl and Moran, just on e-half minute back , wa s s ixth overall. Wedged between the 250cc A guys was AA rider and Team Havoline Captain George Gr ee r w ho finished a respectable fifth overall and s ec o nd in class after being passed by Phillips in lap three. Vet A-<:Iass riders Ricky Huffman and Darryl Campbe ll battled for three consecutive laps, but lap four ga ve Huffman the break he needed to move away and take the class win in lap five by three minutes over Campbell. Huffman also fin ished nint h overall for the da y, just 11 minut es ba ck from Hess. Four-Stroke rider Glenn Ho lcomb jumped out to a first-lap lead over the thumper pack and pulled an impressive lead of seven minutes over the second-place finisher on his way t6 a 12th -place overall finish .
