DELTA,OH,APR.27 The Carlson duo of Jeff and Eric took control of the Vintage-1989 class taking the top finis hing position s at Delta Raceway' s season·openi ng race of the MRA 1996 series. Jeff Carlson rod e a stro ng race, bettering his father by a comforta ble margin while his Eric also had a good ride going, taking the run ner -up spot. The saying that old Hond as never die was evid ent as both of Carlson ' s mach ines performed well over the tough Delta track. A somewha t light rider turnou t gave those riders that were there a well-prepped track and nice long mot os. In th e 80cc Novice cla ss th ere wa s some excitin g racin g as Ryan Rich ard son put on a gre at cha rge thr ough the pack to claim second after a hard..,arned ride. Richard son 's first-mot o start had himse lf hung up in the gat e whi le the re st of t h e pack w as long gone. Ry a n Ross mot ored out front to a commanding lead white Mike Simon and Chris Talbot battled ove r second and end ed th e mo to in that order w ith Rich ar d son movin g into fou rth by th e motos end. Moto two was a great battle wit h Ross ou t fron t again wh ile a melee ensued between Simo n, Talbot and Richards on. Richardson put a slick move to the insid e through the do ublejump bow l turn section to mo ve into second while Simon slip ped back to fourth. The tr io stayed close to the finish with Ross winning by a margin and Richar d son taking second ov era ll and Talbot third . Scott Donaldson put his machine into the lead of the 125cc Begin ner d ivision first mot o and cruised to the win with a good battle behind him RA.' lGlO CORDOVA, CA, APR. 21 Michael Han nas finished second to Supersportclass winner Curtis Roberts yet took home the first-place tro phy in what would become a day of protests and disqu alifications at roun d three of the NCMRRA Cha mpionsh ip, held at Prairie City. Curtis Roberts launched from the pole position and was followed into tum one by Hannes. Jerry John son and Brian Harp. Roberts quickl y led the char ge as the field of.rid er s nego tiated th rou gh the first series of tu rns . As the riders cli mbed the back se ction of th e cou rse a nd woun d their way down the corkscrew, Roberts emerged with an already -comforfable lead as he a pproached the main front str aigh ta way. Both Hannas and Johnson accepted the challenge as Rob erts rock et ed past the main g ra nds ta nd vie w ing a rea. Johnson attacked Hanna s a s Robe rts began to pull away from the two other riders. As Roberts checked out, Bruce.Utzi g began to d ice with Brian Harp, who led down the main straight on lap number four . Only a bike length se parated them as they en tered tu rns two and th ree . Rob ert s, Hanna s and Johnso n pulled away in ~ ingle file. Lap five h ad Utzig d ivin g under Harp. Mean whil e, John Daker was moving up to contest fifth \\;th Harp. At the finish Roberts had an insurmountable lea d a nd tu rned to wa ve backward s as he passed the start/ finis h line . Hannas a nd Johnson would follow. These finishing positi ons would change after a pr otest was levied against Roberts' machine. Th e p roblem was th at Robe rt s bik e had steel bracing w elded to the s toc k swin gann. Thi s bracing accordin g to Roberts was du e to a crack and was considered on his part to be primarily co smetic and not a performance-enha ncing modification. It was judged to be a violation of Supersport clas s ru les. Ironically, th is wo u ld benefi t both Hannas and Johnson, both of whom were disqualified for Stock-class modi ficati ons earlier in the day. Results STK: 1. Ken T" kt"d.J (Yam); 2. McGavran runs away at Starwest Motocross By Ton y Alessi PERRIS, CA,APR. 28 Tea m Ho nda 's Bryan McGavran was the to p minibike pilot after he po sted ove rall wins in the 8Scc, Stock Modi fied (14-1S) and Supermini div isions during the AMA Lorett a Lynn 's area qualifier held at Starwes t Supe rcross Park. The area quali fier brings togeth er local riders from the sur rou nd ing com mu nities and gives them the op portunity to qualify for the regiona l even t, at which top finishers from New Mexico, Arizon a, Nevada, and Northern and Southern California compete for four spots in the final at Loretta Lynn 's. McGavran won five ou t of six motos entered , defeated only once by b y Bill y Payne, who woul d not be denied victory during the openi ng Supermini moto . Payne's Team Green / Pro Circuit / AXQbacked Kawasaki was up to the task in the second mo to. Payne seemed to be on his way to a repeat performance, but a hard land ing and a twisted wrist stopped his charge and forced him to settle for sixth in the moto. Doug Parsons was on his wa y to top hon ors in the B divisions after he won both the 125 and 2SOcc Stock B classes and scored a close second in the 125cc Mod ified B, but a crash in the 250cc Mod ified B left him sidelined wi th a broken leg an d out of the ru nn ing for the regio nal in JW1e. Las t year's Loretta Ly nn's Bvclass champ Casey Lytle made the move to the A divis ion and looks to be a big threat for the class title, winning the 125 and 2SOcc Mod ified A divisions. Lytle will no do ubt be one to watc h at both the regional and the final in Hu rri cane Hills, Tennessee, in August. Results 51 STK (U): I. Qlad Cort"!l (LEM); 2. Col ..
