Deal grabbed the lead shortly after the start
of the first 80 (7- 11) mo to followed by Josh Carlson and the rest of the pack. Just after the first
circu it Ca rlson crashed in a sharp left-hand tum
and lost several positions. Meanwhile, Deal was
on cruise control to his firs t victory of the day
with Jose ph Ettesvold and Jeff Van Vleet finishing second and third. Unblemished by his miscue, Carlson remounted and charged back into
fourth place by races end.
After the first lap of the second rnot o, Deal
wa s chased this time by Ettesvold. Carl son,
howev er, was o n th e move, as he slid past
Ettesvold on lap two in the hope of delivering a
challenge to the dimi nu tive race leader. But Deal
ha d al ready open ed up a comfortable margin
and checked out to sco re win number two. Carlso n's fi rst-mo te co me back earned h im the
"never quit" award. Combined with his secondplace finish behind Deal in moto tw o, Carlson's
first-mote heroi cs earned him rwmer·up honors
overall . Ettesvold netted third overa ll by vir tue
of his 2-4 moto finishes.
