Jim Neese took overall wins in the 125cc A and 250cc A on Dun lop Day at Muddy Creek Raceway, battling wit h Kevin Walker all afternoon to pr oduce some hot racing on a bone-chillingly cold da y. . The AMA United States MegaSer ies ope ner has trad itionally fallen on the day after the Daytona Supe rcross, and usu ally quite a numbe r of rid ers travel all night to get to Mud d y Creek. Th is year, reco rd-b reak ing low temperatu res kept many ri ders away, but 550 hard y so uls bund led up to do bat tle for Du nlop tires in the amate ur classes and MegaSeries-scale payout s for the pros . Neese's stiffest cha llenge came from Kevin Walker, the nationa l ama teur champion in the 25-Pl us class wh o b ro ke his co lla rb one last September and h as ju s t ret urn ed to raci n g. As the lig h t fad ed , th e cro wd strained to watch the two battles shap ing up Neese dicing with Walker for the lead. the n the pa ck of Hod ges, Da vid Pri ce, Ryan Duff and Swea t. Walke r cras he d h al fw ayth rough the mota, giving Neese some breath ing room. Walker recovered wit ho u t losi ng a po sition, b ut Nl.'t.'SC had the momentu m for an easy win. Du ff took third, with Hod ges finishing fou rth , third ove rall. Billy Liles wo rked his way up from a ho rrible start to join the pack in fifth, bringing Demu th along. O nly 30 feet fro m the fin ish, Liles' s Su zuki flip ped for no ap pa ren t reason, sending Billy to the groun d u nhu rt and pu tting Demuth into fifth. Results 50 (4-6): I.
