Seasoned pro Rod ney Smith and up- and-comer
Rusty Holland swapped 1-2 positions in the premier p rofessi onal clas ses at rain -abbrevia ted
round fou r of the GFI California Winter Series
held at Prairie City OHV.
Inclement weather forced cancellation of the
second rou nd of motos, with official res ults
based o n first-mote finis hes o nly . Holland
top ped the 2SOcc Pro class in the first moto of
the day, followed by Smith in second. At the

close of the first 125cc Pro moto, Smith held the
lead with Holland in purs uit.
The 125cc Pro mo to opened with Ho nda
moun ted Ty Birdwell in front of Suzuki factory
off-road rider Smith and Holland . Holland was
making his ho me-turf debu t on his new Team
Gree n /S plitFire Pro Circuit Kawasa ki.
Smith and Holland quickly d ispatched Birdwell, wi th Smith stretching out a six-second lead
ove r Holla nd that he would never relinquish .
Holla nd in tum had 17 second s over Spud Walter s, who had just taken th ird from a fad ing
Birdwell .

from perenn ial front-ru nne r Ricky Ryan and his
Lind emann Engineeri ng / Fox-backed Yamaha .
Ryan tried every trick in the book to get around
Walters , and h is con sis tent pr essure began to
wea r on the Suzu ki rider. Walters eventually left
an openi ng and Ryan du cked inside for the pass
on the last qu arter of the last lap. Smith took the
win, follow ed by Holland and Ryan.

Wh ite, Suzuki rider Craig Humphrey and Cliff

extremely mud dy conditions halfw ay through
the first lap, slippi ng out of conte ntion for the
win . Cook soon passed Humphrey for second
and the three front -runners pull ed away from
the rest of the field , engaging in a tigh t battle
for sev era l laps. Cook was eventually ab le to
pa ss Cheselske at the d ownhill hairp in an d
move ou t to a five-second lead . Humphrey also
go t by Chesel ske and the finishing orde r was
s et, w ith Co o k ta k in g th e checkers ov e r
Hum ph rey in se co nd and Chese lke a cornmendable third .
