Mil«-}- Klin~l'r; -I Lany OTHG Grand Prix wins to Webb, McGuire By Greg Robertson GORMA;II, CA, FEB11 Mik e Webb and Kelly McGuire captured the Over Th e Hill Gang's Pro - and Intermed iateclass win s respectively during California Racing Club's inaugu ral running of the Diamond Head Grand Prix at Quail Valley OHV Park. The Pros and Experts were the first wave to , take off from the dead-engine start with Jim Henn hold ing a slight lead over Webb, joe Crouch and Marc Johnson as the Pros headed into the hills for the first time . Expert leader David Fajardo was being hou n ded by Matt Wood ward a nd .Scott • Berger. Coming out of the canyo ns and onto the motocross track, Webb had a 12-second lead over Henn a nd Joh nso n, who had pa ssed Crouch . Webb's lead continue d to grow, and wh en the checkers fell after four long la ps he was we ll ahead of Henn. john son finished a few ,"",onds off Henn's pace for third wi th Crouch fourth. Wood war d passed Fajardo for the lead on the fina l lap for the Expert-class win. Berger came across the line in third ahead of Duane Qua le. Ph il Means led fellow In te rmed ia tes Fred Thiel, Mark johnson and Cliff jen ning s thro ugh the motocross track on the opening lap . Roger Hayes came from a fifth-place start to take the lead as the pack came back out of the canyons. McGurire was maki ng up g round fr om h is nin th-place start to run four th behind Johnson and Thiel. johnson started challenging Hayes fnr the top spot as David Rodrigues mad e his wa y ar ound McGuire and int o third place. Ha y es continued to hold off johnson until a troubl esome last lap saw him drop to a 10th- place finish. McGu ire pu t in the qu ickest final lap and was ab le to ge t aro u n d bo th Rodriguez a n d john son to collect the victory. RAEFORD, ;IIC, FEB. 11 Montrose motocross has long been known for its great winter racing, and the challenge of its bru tal sands d rew over 240 riders from six stat es to this even t. Mike Andrews gra bbed the ho leshnt in firstround 125cc Pro action over David Price, Brando n Tu rlington an d Tildon Styr on . Andrews w as qu ick to wid en h is lead while the trio of rid er s behind battled hard for second. In th e secon d lap Styr on took a hard spill off the tires and collected Turlington wi th him. Styron was able to recover and finish out the moto, whil e Turl ington chose to sit out with a badl y bruised back. Team Green Kawasaki's Mitch Hodges now . rode in third and went to work on Price, wi th Troy Brewer on Hodge's back door. Andrews went on to pull ou t a 20-second lead by the tim e the checkers fell for th e firs t-mo te win while Pri ce h eld Hodges at bay to secu re secon d . Brewer passed the line in fou rth just ahead of Maryland 's Chri s Brown . Things did not go as easily for Andrews the second time aro und in 125cc Pro action as a lastplace sta rt ou t of the gate had him playing catchup the who le mota . Brewer had timed the gate perfectly and took charge of the pack for the first circui t, Price and Hod ges were again going at it tooth and nail for second, whil e Andrew s was picking off one ride r af te r anoth er . Andrews wo rked pas t Hod ges an d Price and began du eling with Brewe r, who cut too tight in a tum and po pped the tire, wa tchin g And rews tly by on the outside to take over the lead for good .
